I have created a couple of home pages for (2) Lincoln County decendants of Hezekiah Adkins, famous Revolutionary War veteran of Wayne County, Virginia. (later W.Va.)

Hopefully, the home page address for the two C.S.A. soldiers will show up in this message.

Thank you,

HITNER

DigNBones  (View posts) Posted: 18 May 1998 12:00PM GMT
Classification: Query

Rev. John K. Hitner, Confederate veteran, was supposed to have been buried in the Confederate plot at Spring Hill cemetery according to his obituary on 24 Sep 1927. However, I have discovered that a John Hitner, buried on 25 Sep 1927, lies in an unmarked grave at Highland Cemetery instead. The obit mentions burial to be made on Sunday, 25 Sep 1927 so the burial date and name matches. My questions are: Are unmarked gravesites on any list? How do I go about getting a tombstone for this man whose reconition is long overdue?

My source for the burial is from actual cemetery records of Spring Hill/Highland

UPDATE: July 1, 1988
There seems to be a mistake about the grave of John Hitner because his burial is recorded in two different cemeteries. A tombstone for him is in the Confederate Plot at Spring Hill, but his name also appears on the cemetery map for Highland. I will research this further.

Obtaining A Tombstone

My aunts got tombstones for some of our relatives. This is what they did to get a tombstone:

Contact a veteran's hospital for a form to fill out. Fill out and mail the form to address on the form. They will contact you after reviewing the form you mailed. It could take several months to hear from them. They send the marker to you.

My great grandfather, Allen BLANKENSHIP (BLANKINSHIP), was enlisted twice. He was enlisted in First Va State Line Company in Smyth County. His second enlistment was with the 45th Batallion Company D in Logan County. He was taken POW at Harrisonburg, VA and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland.

He is buried in Wyoming County. His gravemarker is a home made marker made of cement, no dates. If you would like more precise directions to the grave, e-mail me.

Thanks, Pamela Deniese Honaker
