Barta Family from Nagyrede, Hungary

Classification: Lookup
Surnames: Barta
My father in-law is looking for siblings that he has not been in contact for years. The names I have are Jozsef Barta 70 yrs old....Miklos Barta 76 yrs old...Maria Barta 62 yrs old. I would think that Maria has probably married. Their mother's maiden name was Maria Tihanyi. She was born in 1912. They lived in Nagyrede and we do not know if they are still there or have moved. We also believe that Maria the daughter would have been confirmed in a church in Nagyrede. We also believe that Miklos was a borderguard in Hungary. The brother who is looking for them is named Szilard Barta who attended a high-school in Gyongyos from 1949- 1951 or 52. I have a street address of Rakoczi ut 78 Szam??? Szilard left Hungary in 1956 during the revolution and has never been back. He eventually came to Canada and is still here. I have tried to find names through phone directories but have had no luck. If anyone could even find me the parish address and phone numbers that would be great. Thank you to anyone who can help me in this matter. My father-in-law is getting on in age and would like us to find his family.

Thank you for your response. I am a little lost having never done this. How do I communicate with the mayor of a Hungarian town when I cannot speak or write Hungarian? I also have additional information about a high school that Szilard Barta attended from 1949- approx 1952. The name of the school in Gyongyos is called Mezogazdasagi Teknikum. It was on the third floor of the building. I have tried finding the school on the internet and came up with nothing.

Hi,
It's spelled Technikum, but since then it become a College: http://alia.karolyrobert.hu/cms/netalon.xml?data_id=3

English should be OK to write the mayor.

Joseph,

Thank you for your response, and for the mayor's email address. I did email him and have had no response as of yet. I was thinking of calling him direct. What do you think?

Dear Teresa,
Perhaps Nagyréde is too small of a place for the mayor to speak English, I was thinking of Gyöngyös, my mistake. The phone call would be just as hopeless unless you can find somebody who speaks Hungarian.
Strictly speaking, officially local administrators can't search for or give out personal information. It's try and hope for the best situation in case somebody in the City Hall willing to do it in private. I'll write you a short letter below in Hungarian, you send it and wait and see, if still no answer, try calling the Nagyréde Bartas in the phonebook by somebody who speaks Hungarian.

If nothing helps, you can try the official channel, which is the Hungarian Consulate or the government agency in Hungary dealing with finding people: Office of the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services, where the Consulates are also sending the requests:

Tisztelt Polgármester Úr!
Elnézést a zavarásért, családtag kereséssel szeretnék Polgármester Úrhoz fordulni kanadából.
Teresa Lowe

P.s.
Teresa, I'm not sure of the Rakoczi ut 78 address, is that in Nagyrede or Gyongyos? The Technikum address in Gyöngyös is Mátrai út 36, at least today.

Nagyréde has a Rákóczi Ferenc utca (út=road, utca=street, can be mixed up in memory) here is the Nagyréde map:
http://www.cylex-tudakozo.hu/terkep/nagyr%C3%A9de.html

The Gyöngyös - Rákóczi út search finds it in the nearby Abasár:

Hope this helps,
Joseph

Hello Joseph,

Thank you so much for your help. I forwarded your letter to the mayor of Nagyrede, so I have now sent it to him in English and Hungarian, and yes I sent it to the email address you gave me. The address I gave you is in Nagyrede and it is ut not utca.

We tried finding phone numbers in the phone directory but could not come up with anything. We were on a Hungarian white pages web site, but could not get any Bartas which seemed strange. Maybe you know a better website for telephone assistance. Do most Hungarians have phones? I was doing a little research and found that about only one third of the population have phones, so perhaps there is a chance that they do not have a phone. I also looked up catholic parishes and it said they do not help you look for people, that you may get help if you contact the parish in the town itself. So I will try to find the name of the parish in the town of Nagyrede.

Thank you so much for your help. Talk to you soon.

Teresa

Teresa,
This is the English language phone directory:
http://www.tudakozo.t-com.hu/main_en?xml=main&xsl=main

Chose Nagyréde from the Town search, you get the full address in a new window by clicking on the names.
The 7 hits are in three different addresses, five in the Hunyadi János utca 13 (#1,2,3,5,7), one in Hunyadi János utca 38 (#4), and one in Horváth-kert utca 52 (#6). The last one, Barta Zoltán shows Profession: autószerelĹ‘ =(car mechanic).

Joseph,

I tried the telephone directory and had no luck. We were informed that they very possibly will not have phones. It was also suggested that they may still live in the same town as most people stay in the same area their whole life. Do you feel that it is possible that they would have remained in Nagyrede? We may just come over and look for them ourselves. Do you think this would be difficult? I have two other options that I will try, and then we may fly over soon. Thank you for all your help. It is very kind of you. Talk to you soon.

Teresa
