Where and when is your MacMillan interest? Don't worry about the spelling. I have lots of info. on Hebrides branch and a smaller amount on Argyll one. Also Grahams and Clarks in the family - but then we all share such names.

Give me a start and I'll see what I have and if any fits. Meanwhile, good hunting.

My GGGG Grandfather was Donald McMillan who married Mary McNicol. I do not have many details on Donald but I know that he was deceased prior to his son's wedding on 26 June 1855.

Donald and Mary's son was John McMillan, born November 1838 in Barra, Outer Hebrides, who was a tailor who married Grace Stewart in Clachan, Kilcalmonell. They had the following children:-

Grace Stewart, who married John Russell, Donald (b. 18/04/1856),Mary (b. 25/12/1858), Margaret (b. 08/07/1861), William (b.26/10/1863)and John McMillan (b.03/07/1866). The McMillan children were all born in Kilcalmonell, Argyll.

I hope that this may connect with your McMillan's

Do you have any fits on the Kintyre Argyll Donald McMillan (son of Angus McMillan & Kate McNeil,) who married Catherine (Kate) McMillan in Feb 1778? I know about their son Angus, miller at Barr, but need to know if other kin were descended from Donald's or Kate's McMillan branch e.g. Matthew, John, Duncan

I am searching for information about my great-great grand-parents, daniel Montague born 1827, died 4/7/1906, and his wife Isabel Cameron. Their daughter Agnes Montague, born 29/11/1858, died 7/1/1933, and her husband, Robert MacMillan, born 1855, died 4/1/1926. I believe they came from Kirkcudbright.
I would be very grateful if you can help me find any extra information.

What are certainly the folks you are seeking were in Kirkcudbright [and therfore not in Argyll] at the time of the 1881 Census.

Daniel Montague 52 Harbour Master b Troqueer, Kirkcudbright was living in High St, kirkcudbright with his wife Isabella 43 b Lochalsh Ross and cromarty; son William 23 Joiner; Elizabeth 19 gen servt; Isabella 16 gen servt; James 13, scholar [i.e. still at school]; Maggie 11 scholar; Robert 6 scholar; and Alexander B Montague, 5 months grandson. All the children were born in Kirkcudbright.
Agnes [age given as 21] was already married and living with husband Robert McMillan a coal merchant in Milburn St, Kirkcudbright. They had an as yet unnamed infant son of one month. All three were born in the town.
Hope this helps. Good hunting.

One of my ancestors was a John Thomson (1790 - 1872) who was a miller in Barr. His mother was Catherine McMillan.

Might it be worth exchanging notes on these families?

I am working on some research for my brother in law. His family originates in Ardminish in Argyll(Murdo Bard MacMillan) and then into Lewis, various places on the island, transplanted numerous times.
Do you know anything about this branch? The best way to get info, etc. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks ,
Chris Matthews

There are a number of answers to your question.

I doubt I have to hand (certainly nothing like a complete record) of the branch you mention.

However, if you can give me just a bit more detail such as (broad) dates for Murdo or a few more names, I am sure I can find something on the Censuses.

Beyond that, the online Scots Origins database, should allow people to be found either since formal registration began post 1855 or in the Old Parish Register records before that date [back in some cases to 1555].

One further thought. You might like to contact Graeme MacKenzie, the curator at the Clan Macmillan Centre on clancentre@clanmacmillan.org
He often knows of folks already researching a particular line.

Good hunting - and do contact me again if you can give me any more to go on or you think I can help
