George Washington Carter owned land in Pope Co. in 1843, Twp. 6N, Range 19W, William Carter owned land in same Twp. on same date. Trying to connect them. There is mention of G. Washington est, Gally Rock Twp. in 1844. Could George have been dead then. Would like to locat a map of the Townships during those dates. George is listed on the 1847 tax list as, Carter, G.W. est. I assume est. means estate. Need map and Help! Cant find him on the xensus anywhere. Ken Speer

I found in Probate Book C an item concerning the heirs of George Carter. One of the documents is dated 26 Apr 1843, where Samuel M. Hays was appointed public administrator of the estate of George Carter, deceased.

Another item dated 24 Jan 1844 was guardianship of the minor heirs of George Carter. Joseph Gibson was appointed guardian of the Carter children:
Caroline age 12
Fanny age 10
Elisha age 7
Elijha age 3

It is signed by Joseph Gibson "as next of kin".

I wrote an article in the Pope County Historical Journal on these documents. I found the two Carter sons living in Yell County, Arkansas in 1850 with Joseph Gibson in Dardanelle Township.

Hope this bit of information will help you. Since I also have a George Carter really early, it caught my attention. I don't think there is any connection to my Carter family, though.

It has been a while since you posted your original request so this may be old info to you. In a book titled "Family Maps of Pope County, Arkansas", George W. Carter purchased land in adjoining Sections 17 and 20. The land was located just east of Holla Bend and south of Flag Lake Road. The land is on both sides of the Arkansas River. By overlaying the map in the Family Map book over a current day map, it appears that at least part of the land is located in the Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge. If you would like copies of the maps, email me at SarahandMatthewsMom@msn.com and I can send them to you.

If you are still looking for them on censuses, be sure to check Yell and Conway counties. The land is just north of the Pope/Yell county line and Conway county is nearby.
