If you are citing where someone lived, but they were born in Ohio county in Virginia (pre 1861) do you leave it as VA or change it to WVA to match today's states? I have the same issue with New Amsterdam vs New York. Which is the appropriate way to do this in the genealogical world?

Thanks.

Lou

I run across this in all of my research because relatives date back to 1802 Virginia. Not sure is is correct but for the assistance of other researcher I list it as Va/WV so it can be found either way.
