Makay, Makoju,Makaji,Mackay...
Grandfather born there in 1884. Birth certificate lists him as Joanas Makay.

I know a few people from that town. Do you have any other information? I could post your question on a board used by many people from Kucura and a neigboring town (Ruski Kerestur).

If you have a birth certifificate, do you have a mothers maiden name, sponors etc. What religion? Maybe GC-Greek Catholic? I am only guessing by the surname.

Joanas was taken from the church record. More likely his "everyday" name was Jan or Janos.

No other info on paper work.
My mother wrote to family late 60's. They spelled it Makoju, later as Mackay, John and Celia Mackay

But if you have any other information to share it may be helpful. There is a Makai family I met once from Kucura or a neighboring village. They now live in Southern Ontario, Canada.

I you have anything like old letters or photos it would also be helpful.

FYI, Makai/Makaj would be a more spelling, allong with Hardi.
