My husband was born in Suriname and I have just started to research his ancestry. Names include: van Ravenswaay, van den Berg, van Veldkamp, van Overeem. My husband's grand parents were born in Suriname to the best of my knowlege between 1878 to 1892.

Surnames: van Ravenswaay, van den Berg, Overeem
Hello! My husband's family is Overeem from Suriname and his mother is Van den Berg. He has Van Ravenswaay family in Canada. I do have some information from another relative from Holland, but I have not verified anything yet.

Dear .. (i didn't catch your name)

In the netherlands there is a group of persons. They are called BOEROES. They all are descendants from farmers who emigrated to Surinam about 1845.
They have a website called www.boeroes.nl were you can find information and i think familytrees of the familienames you mention.
It's all in dutch but if you contact the people they will be willing to translate in English for you.

Good Luck,

Jeff van Aalst

I May know someone who has a connection to the Overeem's you know in New Jersey. My father's family is from Suriname. He has 2 sister inlaw's whose families have a connection to Overeem. One is his sister inlaw Petronella Johanna Overeem, the other is Elfried van Brussel, with Overeem connections.

I have contact with a jerry Overeem, who lives in New Jersy and is researching the Overeem family.

I have also found a family on the internet that includes Overeem's and Ravenwaaij's in their family tree 'Parenteel van Cornelis Jooste van Brussel'
http://www.boeroes.nl/genealogie/vanbrussel/vanbrussel-frm3..... Also there is another family tree 'Parenteel van Pieter Overeem'. http://www.boeroes.nl/genealogie/overeem/overeem-frm3.htm.

My family connects via The Brijbag family from Surinam.

Correction - Jerry Overeem lives in New York (as do many of my close cousins). I have cousins in New Jersey too.

I'm fortunate enough to have taught myself how to read Dutch (I live in Australia - not much chance to practice Dutch here) - very usefull when researching a Dutch family. I find it hard to write in Dutch though - I find this online program useful when translating from Dutch to English, and visa versa (not perfect - but it gets me there)

However, the best thing to do is to familiarise yourself with some of the terms used frequently in Dutch genealogy. Often when I translate the pages - even the names get changed, and they shouldn't need to be.

Hi Dinabeth! I have met Jerry Overeem a couple of years ago. He is my husbands cousin. It was a branch of the family that had lost touch and it was fun to reunite. I haven't touched my genealogy in a long time but need to get back into it.

I know that we are related to the Bribags (spelling?) somehow but not sure of the exact connection. My Sister-in-law Mamie Giancarli knows, but she is currently visiting family in Holland. Feel free to contact me.

I have Mamie on my facebook. My aunty was Petronella Johanna Overeem (tante Liene) who married to August Brijbag. My dad is oom August's brother.

Do you know any Dutch? I always assume that the overseas family does - but so many of them are now in English speaking countries.
