Maternal greatgrandmother was Isabell CRAIG MCGUFFIE.She was born in 1838 the first of three children, Marion,b 1843 and Matthew b1848. Family immigrated to the US from Scotland in 1848. Looking for antecedents beginning with parents of MCGUFFIE children. Regrettably, do not know where they lived in Scotland but family tradition has it that they departed from Castle Douglas. Don't know where that town is in relation to Kirkudbright. Could use some guidance here too. Thanks. Fred Parker

Castle Douglas is not far north (and inland) from Kirkcudbright. They are both in the same county of Kirkcudbrightshire. It would be more likely that they would leave from the coastal town of Kirkcudbright than the inland town of Castle Douglas. There is more than one McGuffie family in the area. Sometimes the name is spelled McGuffog.
Try looking at the Dumfries & Galloway pages on the web and tracing all the links you can find.
Happy hunting

Hi Marcel: This is Fred Parker. Thank you for your info and for your incredible thoughtfulness. I believe that you did find my family. One or two discrepancies may be explained by memory and handwriting. Isabella's birthday was believed to be 10 June 1838 and Marion was believed born in 1843. Another brother, Matthew, was born in 1848, possibly in the US. This is the year Isabella told census taker she emigrated to US. Had no knowledge of brothers James and John but do have correspondence from Matthew to father, John, concerning William's health. Thanks again.

Fred

I am a photohistorian and I am tracing a family of McGuffies who emigrated to Tasmania in Australia and in the process downloaded a heap of McGuffie names at the LDS centre from the Scottsih Church Records indexes.

I noted your query of a month ago on the Kirkcudbright Gen Web site and believe this is your family:

MCGUFFOG Isabella Craig (F) C 8 Jan 1838
MCGUFFOG James (M) C 9 Apr 1834
MCGUFFOG John (M) C 18 Nov 1835
MCGUFFOG Marrion (F) C 27 Jan 1842
MCGUFFOG William (M) C 9 Dec 1839

Parents were John McGUFFOG and Marion KERR
All baptisms occurred in Crossmichael, Kirkcudbright

They were married there 25 Mar 1834.

Assuming John was born in Crossmichael (which of course may not be correct) here are the 3 likely baptims/births:

John (M)Born 18 Jul 1808 James MCGUFFOG Marrion SPROAT

John (M)Chr. 30 Aug 1801 Robert MCGUFFOG Isabel MCGILL

John (M)Born 10 May 1813 William MCGUFFOG Agnes SLOAN

This family bears no obvious relation to the one I am tracing which is from Wigtownshire.

Hope this helps.

Marcel

I am looking for a family of McGuffogs that moved to liverpool in the 1800s. Isabella, who was reportedly 58 in 1901 married a James Guthrie. They had a daughter Janet who married James Lester. Their son John was my grandad.

My family believe that relatives ran the mill in Kirkudbright any help would be gratefully recieved

Sorry, this is not about McGuffie but about Fred Parker. I am wondering where your name fits in here. I am researching Parkers and am interested in you. I will be grateful for your response. Barbara Parker Trautman

The family of McGuffie's you seek may be part of my husband's family but I have never been sure. I understand that a John McGuffie left Castle Douglas for New York before 1856. He was b.10 May 1813 and may have married Marion Kerr before leaving - if so I have traced 6 chn. Matthew Criag McGuffie his son (he added an 'a' - MacGuffie) married and had a son Robert Nichol MacGuffie b. 15 March 1888 d.1907. This Robert had 3 chn.
If you can throw any light on this family please contact me.
