Apartments on N. 18th St in late 1940's

I'm trying to find out the location of a group of apartment buildings where I lived in the late 1940's. I think they were near the north end of N 18th St. I remember that there were several of them parallel to each other, maybe 2 stories high and probably brick. The doors (on the ground floor at least) were on the front of the buildings (no hallways).

There were lots of kids, so the tenants were probably GI's & their families.

There was a factory of some sort that blew a lunch whistle at noon.

Sorry to be so vague, but I was only 4 years old.

Thanks,

Margot

What was your dad's name? I could check the city directory next time I go to the library and get that address for you. I live in the Kansas City area.

Hi,

My parents are George and Carlene Lind. My aunt & uncle lived there too - Sam and Mary Wells.

Thank you for your help.

I stopped at the library on my way home from work and here's what I found:

They had Kansas City, KS directories for 1940, 1942 and then jumped to 1954. They are not there in 40 and 42 but here is the 1954 Kansas City, KS info:

Lind, Geo I Jr. (Carlene V) mfg agt h1216 N 25th
Lind, Geo I (Margt) comml artist 1211 Georgia
Wells, Sam'l (Mary) mech 1315 N 20th

I looked in the 1949 Kansas City, MO directory and found this:

Lind, George I Jr (Caroline) production controller - Rupert Diecast r 1216 Hilltop Rd

Interesting the street address is the same for Hilltop Rd and 25th St. I looked on mapquest and found Hilltop Rd runs parallel to 18th st on the other side of a cemetery. Here is the link to that map:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?addressInput=1216+hilltop+rd%2C...
Sorry I didn't have time to stay and look at the microfilm, I think they have all the years available. If these aren't the addresses you are looking for, let me know and I will
look at microfilm when I go next time with plans to stay and do more research.

Hi,

1216 N 25th is the address of the house my parents bought in 1949. I'm looking for the address of the apartments where they lived prior to buying that house. The address for Mary & Sam Wells is also where they lived after leaving the apartments.

George Lind at 1211 Georgia is my grandfather.

That was very interesting about finding my father's work information at Rupert Diecasting. I remember his working there. I think my grandfather Carl Rice, an attorney in KCK, was a partial owner.

Thank you so much for looking this up.

Hi again, it's been a few years since we talked about Roy Knapp. I just read your recent posts and the replies about the apartments on No 18th. I have a 1950 city directory and found the same addresses for Geo. Lind and Jr. I looked up Samuel Wells and his address was 3126 No 18th. A Robert Wells was listed at that address as well. Sam is listed as a deputy district court clerk. Does that make any sense ?

Hi,

That address makes sense. Google shows that location is now part of the freeway. Sigh.

I got a call last weekend from Rosie Williams (?-I'm at work and don't have my notes with me). She knows Maybelle Knapp Cline, but says she hasn't been able to reach her by phone. Her mother (Evelyn Troop?) was a close friend of Maybelle's and is still alive at age 92. They lived at 12 & Quindaro, but were not involved with the Rough Riders. She shares my fond memories of the Velvet Freeze!

I sent Maybelle a letter this week, asking if she remembers anything about my father.

Thanks for finding the address.

I lived at 3022 Cissna as a kid and made many trips to that Velvet Freeze. I also worked at Lloyd's Drug Store at 1735 Quindaro for 6 years. I don't remember those apartments on No 18th.
Vernon Brown visited me a while back and loaned me a copy of Rodeo Rhythm.
It was great.

My father grew up at 1211 Georgia. He remembered a boy who would buy a chocolate cone, go outside, and drag it along the Velvet Freeze window on the 12th St. side.

I have a question for you. I remember going to the Home Theater. When I spoke with Rosie, she remembered going to the Quindaro Theater. Were there two movie theaters?

I also remember McCarton's Grocery and Carl's Bakery that had the best donuts.

Another question - if you were standing in front of the Velvet Freeze, were all the stores to the left or the right or in both directions?

Just a block west of Velvet Freeze was the Gauntier Theater. The Home Theater was at 21st and Quindaro. There wasn't a Quindaro Theater that I ever knew of
but before our time there was a Ligget Theater at Cissna and Quindaro. If you stood facing Velvet Freeze, most of the main business area was several blocks west or to your right.
There was a McCaugheys Grocery (we traded there) between Hiawatha and Hutchings streets.
Karl's Bakery was just west of the Quindaro State Bank at 18th. I can smell the donuts. I saw Karl about a year ago.
