Surnames: Sweeney, Sweny, Sweeny, McSweeney
I am trying to trace (Rufus?) Owen Sweeny/Sweeney/McSweeney who may have been born in Calais in abt. 1802. He subsequently was in Digby, Nova Scotia and then moved to Carleton, Nova Scotia in abt 1848. His son, Owen Jr, may also have been born in Calais in 1841/42. Several of Owen Jr.'s children also lived in Maine, as per Owen Jr's obituary in 1928 (son's Norman b. 1867, Calvin b. 1872 and Oren/Oran/Orrin b. 1874.

I am trying to find documentation of Owen Sr's birth and parentage, but can't find online access to early Calais vital statistics. Thanks in advance for your help. I also have information on Mayflower ancestry of Owen Sr's descendants, if someone is interested...

Hi,

You won't find early (up to 1892) Maine vital records online. They were originated & filed in the Town Clerk's offices. The Calais City offices are at www.calaismaine.org/page/963-747/stafff-directory.

You might find the Border Historical Society Research Center, http://borderhistoricalsociety.com/ResearchCenter.html helpful and the Porter Memorial Library, www.porterlib.me.us/services.html#genealogy. Successful Searching!
