What part of Ireland were your Donegans from? Mine were from County Kerry, and settled first in Washington, DC, circa 1850. My own line came West to California in 1860, while others remained in DC--their descendents are still in the DC Metro area.

I am sorry, I do not know where in Ireland our Donegans came from. I know that they resided in Manchester, Lancashire, England prior to traveling to the US. The had to live there prior to 1904 and left after 1910.

The family stayed in Brooklyn with the exception of Stephen who moved to NJ. Where he died. The girls all married in Brooklyn and moved to Rochester.

We are only talking one generation here. Dominick and Ann are my Grandparents.

Thank you for your reply.

Steve: I wonder if the Donegans you wrote about are connected with a Donegan family who married into mine (Lanigan, Ryan) in Lancashire.
Bartley, born in Ireland, had sons Michael and Thomas, both of whom left for the USA in the early 1900s. They stopped off to stay with (I believe, Donegan) family in Brooklyn before moving on to Rochester. I believe they lived out their lives there, as did a Donegan sister.
If you know what became of them I'd be grateful to hear about them. Regards, BetLanigan

Hello,

I have no way of matching the two families as I am so short on family info about my Brooklyn side of the Donegans. But!!! Here is something for you to consider:

Mary Donegan Campbell
Birth: 01 SEP 1915
Brooklyn, Kings, NY
Death: Dec 1978
Rochester, Monroe, NY

Lillian Donegan Haugh
Birth: 5 Apr 1919
Brooklyn, New York
Death: 1 Jan 2006
Rochester, Monroe, New York

Anna (Nancy) Donegan Hume
Birth: 1910
Manchester, Lancashire, England
Death:
Rochester, Monroe, New York

Our family does have ties to Lancashire. Anna and two of her children were left there when Dominick came to the U.S.. And three of Dominick's daughters did end up in Rochester. Mary moved there upon her husbands death to be with her sisters Lillian and Nancy. Nancy move there upon the retirement of her husband from an oil company. She also wanted to be with her sister Lillian. Lillian lived there with her husband and family. But I do not know of a family tie to her and your family. But... that sure is close... I am sorry for the lack of info. I will keep your line in mind in my search. Good luck...

Thanks. I find it intriguing that a crowd of Lanigans from Kilkenny via St. Helens sailed to America with neighbors named Donegan, intermarried some, and all ended up in Rochester. I wonder who/what started it all. Betty
