Cooper is a fairly common surname, so may I make some suggestions? List the given name/names of the earliest Coopers you know, and dates such as born, married, died etc. Now, you may not have all those dates, but anything you can include will help to narrow the search. There are some good researchers who browse this site and they might be able to help you, but without some additional information no one will know whether they've found the right Cooper family, or not.

Happy Hunting (^_^)

Do not get discouraged but "do" follow the very sound advice from Joan? As a result of families bestowing favored names on nieces, nephews, grands, cousins, etc please be more detailed. For example: "My great grandparents were James (Jim) Cooper (born about 1865 in Texas) married to Rosa/Rosia Draper (born about 1866 in Louisiana)". "They're found primarily in Panola County, TX 1910-1930 with kids: Authur(1891), Johnie(1892), Austin(1895), David(1896), Sallie(1900), Jimmie(1902), Isaac(1904), Anna(1906), Samuel(1908), and Robert(1909)." Place a high priority on this search and I'll remain focused. Respond slowly or not at all and I'll go away to help someone else.

The information I have been able to gather has been somewhat help but as I stated to Joan in my post to her, I am just starting looking for my family history and it's a little overwhelming. Thank you for responding.

Detailed Information: Looking for my great grandfather's information. His father's name is James or Jim Cooper possible from Alabama. from the 1880 census. 1920 Census shows him listed as Jim Cooper from the United States, age: 59. 1930 Census shows him as Jim Cooper age 65. I know he resided in the Harrison County (Panola) area. I am also trying to find any information regarding "COOPER SETTLEMENT ROAD". None of the maps I have been able to located shows the location of this road. It can be found on the 1930 Census. If anyone has any information please contact me. Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't get frustrated? Research is not easy, even for those with more experience. At the outset, it appears that you are very fortunate? Your family's roots reach back to 1790 Virginia. That's remarkable!

Your ancestors enumerated Precinct 3 of Panola. That was primarily De Berry to the Louisiana border along US 79. Expect Cooper Settlement Road to be renamed CR ???? to more easily identify for emergency services personnel. Several death certificates indicate burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Segregation was inplace during that era, so there were probably two Mt. Zion(s)?

After looking at some information myself. The spelling of my ggf is in various forms. Authur, Arthur, Author, Artie, Ardie Cooper. He came from a large family. His father's name as stated was either Jim or James Cooper. His mother was Rosa, Rosia, or Rosie Cooper (Draper). I do know that they (gg-grand parents) also resided in Bethany which is close to the Texas border.

Spelling errors, poor handwriting, age disparity, etc are common on census records. Often, the persons asking the questions were not very literate. Your grandfather registered for WWI Draft and that's where I got his 14 Jan 1891 birthdate. Of course that's inconsistent with census records but..... Sometimes you have to accept the earliest recorded date 'cause people forget and even "fudge". An example of this found in the age-progression of Harriet Cooper. She resided with son Albert in 1930 and her age listed as 101. If this was true, she was born 1829. Her death certificate indicates birth 1 May 1834. 1870 Panola-Beat 3-Images 37 & 38 has her married to Edmond Cooper and age 35 (born ca 1845). Who was your grandfather's first wife?
