Hello,

Just to let you know, the name Markham is of British Descent, tracing back to the 1200's
I am currently in search of the "other" side of the Markham, as far as that name given to the slave of that family
and where they originated from. Can you help?

If you are at all related to Edwin Markham (some of the children are Frank, Violet, Viola, many more) you are part Indian. My mother's uncle was Frank Marham, Edwins nephew and he told us that "all the Markham boys married Indians" He did give us many names and dates and as far as I know they were from the Potawatami tribe. If you have any names of your relatives, I could maybe help.

I believe Beryl Markham (West With The Night) came from the Scottish side of the Markhams. I'm not sure if she is related to Edwin Markham, but I would like to know if she is

I should mention that the "Markham boys" (there were 3 or 4 brothers) were married in Niles, MI before spreading out. There was a large Potawatami tribe at that time (late 1800s). If this sounds like the right Markham family, I'll dig up more specific info.

the Scottish connection

Also, this branch of Markhams came from Scotland, I'm not sure of the dates.
Edwin Markham was famous as a poet. He wrote "The Man With the Hoe" (after the painting of the same name) and also this:
He drew a circle to shut me out
Heretic, rebel a thing to flout
But Love and I had the wit to win
We drew a circle that took him in.

So even if you don't have certainty, claim his as a relative, he wouldn't mind.
