I suspect that John Washington Ates is the son of John W Langford Ates born 1834. His first known child in my history is George Buchanon Ates by wife Mary Cockerell in 1858. John W. Langford is the son of Calvin Ates Sn, and Eliza Jane Sullivan.

Hello There, I am a great great grandaughter of John W. Langford Ates son of Calvin Ates and Eliza Jane Sullivan, born 1834 in St. Helena Parish, La and lived in Mississippi. I see by your post he may have have had children by a previous marriage before marrying Mary Cockerell. I show John's children starting in 1958 as George, William and Sarah. Do you have documentation of any kind regarding John Washington Ates as his son. Our family has never known what the W in the name stood for, just certain that it was not Wiley as in his nephew John Wiley Ates son of of his brother Calvin Ates Jr.

we are from the family of calvin stephen ates 1795 married frances crittenden in st helena la. they had five boys calvin ,james,william,thomas,john w. iam from the family of james ates ,and nancy ,they name there first john washington ates they had daniel,josephine,franics ,our family just found out a few days ago.
