I was digging through my Grandma Alice (Mack) Turner's boxes and came across a photograph of several boys in what appear to be some sort of Scouting attire. After a little digging through census records, I figured out these boys at one time were students of the Kansas School for the Blind in KCK in Wyandotte County. This would make sense as Alice's sister Mae worked there for many years.

I believe the picture to be taken in the early 30s judging by the approximate age of the kids and their ages on the 1930 census. The kids I located on that census living at the School were all born in either Kansas or Missouri. Their birth years were mostly in the late teens or early 20s.

I'll post the names of the students that are listed on the back of the photo. If anyone recognizes a name and wants a copy of the picture, I'll be happy to send you one.

(front row) Robert, Redd, Tommy Moss, Dale Walker, Raymond Hards, Paul Cochran, A.G. Williamson (teacher), Jess Layton, Cecil Freeman, Pat Garrahan, Eugene Vogel, Kermit Millen, Eugene Fiedler, Ramon Tejeda, Jack Parli, Leo Thomas, Marion Beal, Harold Vogel and Wayne Primrose.

I have other photos of students at that school. I'll take a look at them and see if there are others with names listed.

Kate, I have a relative who would have been in that school! His name was Roy Eldridge-he was born around 1921. I can't even find census reports for the school. Have you run across his name? He is living with his parents in 1930 and then he disappears.

Since the school still exists, I would contact them to see if they can help.

Thank you for the response. I did that after I sent you a message. Schools rarely reply back though. Yet, thank you again for responding.

I would try working the phones. Ask for the director's assistant/secretary or the person who handles public relations. Or maybe there is someone who keeps track of alums. If the person can't/won't help, ask him/her if you can be referred to someone else.

Be sure to say you're a relative.

Great idea! I'll give the school time to reply to the email, and then I'll call them.

Elaine,

I'll look through my grandmother's stuff and see if I come across the name Eldridge anywhere. Maybe he's mentioned somewhere in one of these notebooks.

Elaine,

I looked at the names on the other two pictures I have, and Roy isn't listed. I'll see if I can dig up Aunt Mae's diary and see if he's mentioned in there.

Thank you for your efforts. I contacted the school, and they responded by saying they did not have any old records. I was given a library address. I wrote to the library and have not received a response yet. Thanks for looking.
