116th Ohio

I am working on a manuscript about the May 15, 1864, Battle of New Market, in which the 116th Ohio participated. Am looking for any letters, diaries, photos, etc. of members of this unit.

Thanks,
Charlie Knight

I am very interested in the 116th Ohio vol. infantry when it was stationed at Dayton, Va., in late September and early October 1864. Any info or suggested sources would be most appreciated.

The lieutenant colonel of the 116th, Thomas Wildes, wrote a book about the regiment, published after war. While it is a very valuable source, it is very difficult to find. Some libraries have it in their special collections dept., and it occasionally shows up - albeit with a hefty price tag - thru rare book dealers.

A recent book (several years old) entitled The Burning, by John Heatwole, gives good picture of the 116th's time at Dayton, Va.

My great-great-great uncle W. H. Mobberly was in Company C, 116th Ohio. He wrote a diary during the war. I have a copy of the manuscript of his diary but he didn't write a whole lot of detail per day, but wrote practically every day. I don't know if any of this would be of interest to you.

I would be VERY interested to know what he has written during the period September 19, 1864 through about October 15, 1864. They were in the Shenandoah Valley and at the Battle of Fishers Hill as well as helped to save the town of Dayton, Virginia, where I am located.

Could I pay you to send me a copy of what he wrote?

I would be most interested in anything you may have from the beginning of 1864 thru June of that year, regardless of level of detail.

I would be glad to share with you the pages of that time period. The diary was transcribed on an old typewriter and I am in the process of retyping it. I hope to be finished shortly.

I am almost finished re-typing what I have. I will share this information with you. When retyping entries, I was unsure if it should be typed exactly as is, with misspellings and all? I am trying to keep to his exact spelling and punctuation.
