Ancestors of Almon Medlin/Medlen - 1831 DeKalb Co. TN

I am new to researching and found old postings on rootsweb regarding information on the Medlen/Medlin Family.

I am searching for Medlen/Medlin in and around the White, Putnam, DeKalb Counties in Tennessee prior to 1850's. Specifically looking for ancestors of:

Almon Medlen/Medlin (b.abt. 1831)
(m. Elizabeth Childress b.abt. 1832)
Their children were (I have all info on children):
Owen Davis Medlen (1852)
William M. Medlen (1853)
Mary C. Medlen (1855)
Charlotte Susan Medlen (1857)
Minnie Sherman Medlen (1865)

If any of these names are within your documentation, please let me know. My brick wall has been Almon (possibly his father was Riley/Raleigh?). Surnames associated with my Medlens are Robinson, Hayes, Childress, Maxwell and Austin.

Any help appreciated.

I looked through my existing tree and can find no relationship to the persons you are looking for. I have a Charles Robinson, whose parents were James Solomon Robinson and Sarah (Dildine) Robinson. Charles had brothers (Albert, Harman, Hiram, William, Jack) and sister (Susannah). Sorry, I couldn't be of more help. Keep searching! You will find Robinson's, many inter-related marriages too. Try Genforum.com too.

I have just recently started to seriously research the Medlen, Gracy, Childress, Robinson, Austin families. My husband is also a descendant of Almon R. and Elizabeth Childress Medlen. He comes through Owen Davis to John Riley and to his mother, Ollie A. Medlen, who married his father, Glen B. Shively in 1924.

I have not found the father of Almon R. Medlen. I have the book compiled by Charlie Marshall in 1985, but she doesn't have that information either.

My mother-in-law, Ollie Medlen Shively, had the story that Harriett Medlen who married John Riley Gracy (the parents of her mother, Clementine Gracy who married John Riley Medlen) was actually the daughter of a man named Rainey whose widow married Allen Medlen and was adopted by him at about age 3. I found Allen Medlin married to Sharlotte (Charlotte?) in the 1850 census of DeKalb Co, TN with a daughter Mary E. Allen age 22/23, Sharlotte age 23, Mary E. age 3.

In 1860, I found Allen, age 34, Charity age 34, Mary E. 14, Hiram 10, Amanda 6, and :Harriet J. age 3.

Do you have any information on this family? Ollie told me Harriet was of Indian blood through her mother and possibly her father, who she thought was a Rainey.

I am wondering if Allen, b. ca 1826-27 could be a brother to Almon b. ca 1830 according to the 1860 DeKalb Co census. This might be another angle through which we could search.

Merry Christmas!
I too have been in touch with Charlie Marshall and Ron Austin. I don't have Charlie's book, but Ron sent me his compiled FTM CD. I have also been in touch with Evelyn Wade (TN), Ruth Robinson Dietrich (KY), and Keith Hayes (CA). I also just published a "beginning" book which I gave to my children for Christmas. I spent over 8 months compiling the book, which contains much info, pictures, and copies of documents.
My line runs from William Medlen. Do you need this info? If so, I can email you my FTM Report on this line of descendants.
Keep in touch!
Robin

Robin -
Thanks for your reply. I would be very interested in receiving your FTM Report on William Medlen and any others you may have. As I stated, my husband is descended from Owen Davis Medlen and Illionois (Eleanora?) Austin. Do you also have information on them? The reason I put in Eleanora is because one of the census records I found had her listed with that first name. Do you happen to know how Owen happened to have Davis as a middle name? And also, do you have anything on the Allen Medlen who married first Sharlotte and then Charity?

If I could buy a copy of the book you put together for your children, I would be most grateful.

Also, I can send you whatever information I may have that you are interested in. Please let me know.

Surnames: MEDLIN, HERRIN
The parents of Almon R. Medlin was Riley Medlin (born about 1805 in North Carolina) and his wife Elizabeth Herrin (born about 1797-1807) in North Carolina. Riley (usually listed as Medley) was lliving in White County, Tennessee on tax records as early as 1826, about the time he married. Then he was listed on the 1830 census in White County. Then he moved to De Kalb Countyy TN (or rather DeKalb County was created out of parts of White County where he lived). He was listed in the 1840 DeKalb Co., TN Census as Riley Medley and his household was enumerated as 112001-000001. He was enumerated next door to Britton Medley, 101-32221. We have researched some possibilities for Riley's parents, but we're not sure. Would like to share information.

David: Am descended from Almon & Charity (Childress) through son William (Sarah Levi Bozarth); then their son James Dallas (Mattie Alma Maxwell) who were my grandparents. Does this connect to you? If so, please contact as I have extensive info on this line.

Sounds like we may be researching the same individuals! According to my family's Bible, Ammon F. Medlen (DeKalb County)was married to Maranda Maxwell. His father was Riley Medlen and his mother was Elizabeth--I do not have the maiden name. I'm pleased to learn it may be Herrin. Our dates are very close in time!

I would be delighted to share information with you and learn more about what you might know.

Illinois Medlen is the correct name. Her tombstone list her name as Illinois. She was Austin. She is buried in the Jones Cemetery in Silver Point, TN.

Almon Medlen according to his will was married to Charity.

I am a decendant of Ammon Medlen through Warren C. and Warren Howard.
