Looking for slave owner in NC

Surnames: Meeks, Odom
I am looking for information on my great-great grandparents parents. My GGgrandparents are Virgil Meeks/Frances Odom. We believe that Virgil is the son of a slave owner named Albert and one of his slaves of unknown name. Virgil was born in November of 1840. We know that frances is the daughter of a native american and a slave girl named Mary. Frances was born in September of 1848. Any guidance or information would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure this is who you are looking for. It might lead to something and it may not. I found a Virgil and Francenia Meeks in Mangum, Orange County, North Carolina. Virgil is listed as being born about 1834 and he was a Black farmer. His children listed in 1880 were Lucious born in 1875, Orin born in 1877 and Annie Meeks born in 1879.
I have found that ages were often guessed at. Census records would have different ages listed every ten years. Also spellings of names changed with the different census takers.
good luck to you

I just found that also living with the afore mentioned Virgil Meeks family were his mother in law Mary Odom age 70 and niece Sybbia age 17.
In the household next to the Meeks was an Odom family. James Odom age 38, wife Aggie age 25, Eveline age 8, Hilria
(a boy) age 5, Rebecca age 1.

Barabra,
The Virgil and Frances Meeks are my great-great grandparents. I am looking for Virgil's slave owner. When he got married in 1868 he listed his father as Albert Meeks. We have been told that his father was a slave owner and his mother a slave. I starting to lean toward an Albert Meeks in Halifax county VA. Since I can't find any Albert who owned slaves in NC. That Albert Meeks also had a slave at the same age as my virgil in 1860. I think the james odom is frances brother, I just haven't been to prove it yet.

I have found possible brothers to your Virgil Meeks. Albert (born 1858+-) and Aggie Meeks of Orange county, NC. They had a son named Vigil.
I found a Phillip and Lucy Meeks of Orange county, NC.
The children I found were John, Virgil, and Mary Meeks. I also found Phillip's death certificate!! Phillip was born in Orange county between 1827-1844. I say this because his date of birth is different on different documents. He died in April 1922. He is buried in the Wotten cemetery. He is listed as Black. His parents are listed as ALBIRD MEEKS and ELIZA STRAINS GROWS both from Orange county, NC.
On a 1870 census I found Enoch Meeks in Ark. He was born abt. 1843. He had living with him an Eliza Meeks age 60 from NC.
I found an Eliza Meeks (a sister?)in Edgecombe county, NC Black, born in 1843+- living with a Salomon Meeks, Mulatto, born in 1819+- Also living in the same household were Sila, Batsy, VIRGIL, Arthelia, Hiram, and Maria all listed as Mulatto.
I hope something in this post helps. If it does let me know please.
Barbara

Barbara,
Sorry for the late reply. I just found this post. Thank you for the information. The albert married to aggie, I did see him and think he is my Virgil's brother. There is someone else on the board that is related to that albert and have also listed his parents as Albert Meeks and Mckenzie Justice. I will look into the other names you mentioned. I hadn't noticed that Phillip/Lucy meeks in the same area. Thank you for your help.
