Hi. I am descended from Frances "
Fannie"
Whittemore (b. May 1845) who married Thomas V. Coleman (through their son William Edward, and William's daughter Bertha Edna
Coleman). I found
Fannie living with Jane and James in the 1850
Rockingham Co., NC census. The head of the house is given as Susan
Whittemore (b. ~1810). Fannie is also living with Susan in the 1860 census, also. I am assuming this is her mother. There is no father given either year, so he may have been deceased or left his family.
There are several other Whittemores in the 1850
Rockingham census, and I believe they are the children of the only elder Whittemores in
Rockingham Co. in 1850, whose name is
Clement Whittemore (1786-1854; wife - Martha Patsey
Browder, 1783 - 1872). The names of Clement's children I have seen are Nancy, Talitha, William W., Sterling A., Isham
Browder,
Augustus C., and Martha Amanda (all born b/w 1809 & 1823). Sterling is said to have died in 1817, and all the other males were listed separately with families in the 1850 census, with the exception of
Isham, who was living/working at a differet residence at the time. I do not believe he married based on future census records.
It's possible that there were other children who moved away. I have seen census records of Whittemores in other states that list the birth state as
North Carolina, and I believe there were some in
Davidson Co. at the same time. Strangely, the names are sometimes spelled differently in the same county and year (e.g. Whitmore, Whittemoore,
Whittimore).
If anyone would like to share information or would like more info, please let me know.
