Hi Barbara,
Did you ever find the parents of Frances Whittemore Coleman, Lavinia Jane Whittemore Groome, and James B. Whittemore? I am still looking (for about 40 years)!

Just wondering if this James B Whittemore is the James Braxton Whittemore married to Fanny Ann Whittemore that was born in CA in 1842? His children were Ellie, John Frank, Eva, Minnie Ethel, Maud, And William Alonso from Barnardville, NC that went to Pueblo COO in the early 1900's. He served in north infantry in the Civil War killed by an ax in a fight at the age of 55. If so, may be able to provide other information.

No, although his wife's name was Fannie (Frances Armfield). I was wrong about his middle initial; it is James M. He was born about 1840, and fought in the NC 45th, company E. Also, the children are different. Thanks for your interest; perhaps there is a connection further back...

Hi. I am descended from Frances "Fannie" Whittemore (b. May 1845) who married Thomas V. Coleman (through their son William Edward, and William's daughter Bertha Edna Coleman). I found Fannie living with Jane and James in the 1850 Rockingham Co., NC census. The head of the house is given as Susan Whittemore (b. ~1810). Fannie is also living with Susan in the 1860 census, also. I am assuming this is her mother. There is no father given either year, so he may have been deceased or left his family.

There are several other Whittemores in the 1850 Rockingham census, and I believe they are the children of the only elder Whittemores in Rockingham Co. in 1850, whose name is Clement Whittemore (1786-1854; wife - Martha Patsey Browder, 1783 - 1872). The names of Clement's children I have seen are Nancy, Talitha, William W., Sterling A., Isham Browder, Augustus C., and Martha Amanda (all born b/w 1809 & 1823). Sterling is said to have died in 1817, and all the other males were listed separately with families in the 1850 census, with the exception of Isham, who was living/working at a differet residence at the time. I do not believe he married based on future census records.

It's possible that there were other children who moved away. I have seen census records of Whittemores in other states that list the birth state as North Carolina, and I believe there were some in Davidson Co. at the same time. Strangely, the names are sometimes spelled differently in the same county and year (e.g. Whitmore, Whittemoore, Whittimore).

If anyone would like to share information or would like more info, please let me know.

I am searching for info on Augustus C. Whittemore born about 1820 NC.
He married into my husband's Mitchell side. Francis E. Hale Mitchell and A.C.Whittemore, June 16, 1864, Rusk, TX.Marriage Book C, Page 266.

Francis must have died before 1870 as she was not with him in the 1870 Rusk, TX Census. They had a son named Clem born about 1865, Texas. I need to find the burial place for him and Frances.
