Hi
I am trying to find any information about my Grandmother Elsie May Constable who died in this Asylum in 1960.
We do not know WHEN she was committed or WHY and I have failed to find any medical records( and believe me I have tried) My Mother was told her mother (Elsie May) had died when she was a young girl. It was only weeks before her death my mother was contacted by Social Services with the terrible news of her confinement in this institute.
I have also failed to find her burial record or details of a cremation. Many kind officers have responded to emails and letters but no luck as per todays date.

DO YOU KNOW ANY ONE WHO MAY HAVE WORKED IN POWICK IN THE 60'S. OR HAVE YOU HAD A SIMILAR FAMILY EXPERIENCE?

Many thanks
Pauline

Hospital records are closed for 100 years so it is very unlikely you will be able to obtain any detailed medical information. However a death for an Elsie M Constable was registered in Malvern District, Worcestershire in 1960, ref. 9d 184 so, if you assume this is the right person, you could at least get the death certificate. Hope this helps.

Hi
Thanks for looking for me, I have already got a copy of the death certificate which confirms my Gran died in the "CARE"
of this terrible place. I have spent many hours researching Powick Hospital as it was the subject of 2 TV docummentry programmes. They used LCD as an experiment on patients and the TV series " World in Action" investigated the conditions and the use of LSD. Many patients received compensation after their relatives sued the NHS.
My difficulty now is finding out where Gran was buried or Cremated? I would like to visit her final resting place!
Best regards Pauline

I too had a relative my Aunt, I came accross this link today, it may not contain your grandmother, maybe it might lead to her http://medicalmuseum.org.uk/archive.aspx?q=Powick&t=all&...

I hope it helps - it would alas give you an insite into life there if nothing else.

Kind Regards

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I have researched this link before, but due to the 100 year rule on health matters their is no link to my Gran.

A university Lecturer named Dr Frank Compton has written many papers on Powick and was kind enough to write to me.
He has been involved with the museum archives.

I have now run out of options to find any details of my Grans burial place but take comfort from the lovely people I have met on Ancestry and at Worcester record office.

Best regards Pauline

I too am researching an aunt who I believed died possibly at this hospital between about 1955-60. I know her birth, can find evidence of her marriage but no records seem to exist of her death. Her name was Marie Cooper

Dear Pauline

I have come a bit late to this thread, but am just researching my uncle Dennis Schofield who died in the hospital in 1956 (he committed suicide there). He was buried in St Michael's church Droitwich. Just an idea that you might look there for your Gran.

Best wishes.

Adrienne

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I will try contacting St Michael's this afternoon. Powick is such a lovely location and now has a very pretty housing complex. I comfort my self with the thought that perhaps my Gran had a window with a lovely view looking out over the fields.
I will let you know the outcome of this new search.
best regards Pauline

Hi, i am trying to find out about my grandad George Bearcroft. I think he was in Powick from about 1911 and died in Powick in 1924. Have just found all this out in doing my family tree.
Hope you have had some luck with finding your family member.
Regards Sadie.

HI, i have no idea about powick hospital, but im wondering if elsie may's older sister elizabeth was married to a william geoffery ward.

there are only 2 elizabeth lowbridges that could be my great grandmothers and elsie's sister is one of them, and there were mental health issues in the family.
