Joining the Ayrshire list

Surnames: Lambie, Lammie, Orr, Stevenson
I am now researching my LAMBIE/LAMMIE ancestors. William LAMBIE/LAMMIE married Margaret ORR on 26 Dec 1828 at Murkirk. Margaret ORR was born on 8 Apr 1810 in Muirkirk to John ORR and Jean/Jane SMITH.

The following children were born to William and Margaret in Muirkirk. John LAMMIE b 2 Oct 1829, George LAMMIE b 2 Jan 1833. Janet LAMMIE b 30 Jun 1834.

They then moved to Avondale, Lks where James 1835, Margaret 1837, Jean and Thomas 1840 (Twins) were born.

My GGGrandfather George LAMMIE (as George LAMBIE which he used from then on) married Elizabeth STEVENSON in Paisley in 1858? and came to New Zealand in 1861 his wife and 2 children, William born 1859 in Eaglesham, Renfrew, and Mary born 1860 Loudon, Ayr (My GGrandmother).

I would like to make contact with decendents of any of the LAMBIE/LAMMIE lines of William LAMMIE/Margaret ORR

re your search for any Lammie family - my mother was a lLammie. Her father was Benjamin Lammie, his father was John. In that family, the names William and Catherine appear. I would be pleased to hear if there is any connection. regards

William LAMBIE married Margaret ORR in Auchinleck, Ayr, Scotland in 1828.
His first 3 children were baptised in Muirkirk,Ayr, Scotland as LAMMIE
His next 3 children were baptised in Avondale, LKS, Scotland as LAMBIE. One of this group came to New Zealand
Even now in New Zealand the pronouncation sounds like LAMMIE. Reoccuring names are, William, George, Robert.
Sorry, to my knowledge we do not have one Benjamin or Catherine. But there are not many LAMMIE/LAMBIE families and there must be a connection somewhere

You will have to identify your Lammie DOB are place of birth. Until you know these, it will not be possible to identify if there is a link.

If you look at my original posting of 4 Feb 2000, it gives all the birthplaces and baptism dates. If you find a link to one of these people please contact me again.

I bumped into this tonight and thought I had to reply regarding the Lammie/Lambie's frm Muirkirk. My great great grandfather was christened Thomas Lammie. He was born to Robert Lammie and Janet Anderson in 1845. He changed his name to Lambie for some reason and that is how the family has been known ever since. Any interest?

As your family also came from Muirkirk, from the same time period as mine, I am sure that there must be a link. However I do not know how. I have not done any further research other than what I had posted in my previous message. Perhaps Thomas was a brother to William my earliest LAMMIE/LAMBIE whose first 3 children were born in Muirkirk 1829 - 1834.

I do feel that the spelling may have had more to do with the parish clerk, as for my family it is only in Muirkirk that the names were spelt as LAMMIE. This is how the name is pronunced in the area that the LAMBIES settled in in NZ.

Well I think if anything, Thomas could be a nephew as his father was born, I would imagine, around 1815-1820. I'm not sure on that one and will look into it this morning if I have a chance. Robert Lammie and Janet Anderson were married in 1841 in Murkirk but Thomas married Mary Goldie in New Cumnock, Ayrshire as Lambie in 1870. The family have been spelt with a 'b' ever since. Robert may have been a brother to yours I'm not sure. You mentioned William, well I know that is a family name, my great-grandfather was William Anderson Lambie. I'll check the 1881 census for Lambie and Lammie in Muirkirk and see what I come up with.

As promised I did some checking regarding your William and my Thomas. Thomas was the son of Robert Lammie married in Muirkirk to Janet Anderson in 1841.

On checking back I have these results but I'd have to get them properly checked of course. I could find no record of Robert and William's births in Muirkirk or any other Lammie but there was John, Alexander Cunningham, Robert and William all born to William Lammie and Margaret Allan in Dundonald ranging from 1799 to 1805. Dundonald isn't very far from Muirkirk and so it is possible they could have noved there.

All this being correct then William and Robert were brothers. Robert was my ggg grandfather.
