My 5th great grandfather, George Hoopingarner, arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1752 on the ship "Phoenix" out of Rotterdam. We have reason to believe he was from the eastern side of the Netherlands or western Germany.
I am looking for anyone who knows of a similar name, HOOPENGARNER, HOPINGARDNER, HUFENGARTNER etc. who can help me find a city or region where I can begin my European research.

I know these people don't really help you search in Europe, but I did run across some Hoopingarners here in Portland. see:

My husband and I are also looking for info on George. We know where he came from etc. But do you have any idea who his parents were or any other relatives from germany?
