Walker, Carmack, and Bruce Cherokees
I'm searching for any info on my Cherokee family. I have at least two, and possibly three ancestors who were Cherokee. My great-grandfather, William Denton Bost, born 3 Dec 1874 in Tennessee, was half Cherokee through his mother, Nancy Susan Carmack, who was born abt 1845, also in Tennessee. According to our family stories, his Cherokee grandfather's name was George; he hid out in the Smoky Mountains while the Army rounded up the Cherokees in Tenn. and led them on the Trail of Tears, and so managed to escape. My gg grandmother, Sarah Ann Walker, daughter of Memory Walker and Martha (?), was also either full or half Cherokee. She was born in 1826 in Georgia, and married William Alexander Bruce in Lumpkin Co. GA. She and her daughter, Phoebe Bruce Jones, lived for some time on a reservation in Roosevelt, Kiowa Co., Oklahoma, where Sarah died on 26 July 1920. I believe that my Walker and Bruce ancestors were married to Indians, but we have no real information to base this on other than family stories. I would appreciate any info, not only on my ancestors, but also on the Cherokee in Tennessee and Georgia. Thank you in advance! Cheryl Jones

Hi, Yvonne - thanks for writing. That makes us cousins! If you are interested, I would be happy to share all of the genealogy info I have so far. We have at least five separate Cherokee lines on the Bost-Carmack side of the family. I haven't identified our Cherokee ancestors on the Bruce side, though I know that Sarah Ann Walker Bruce and my great-grandmother, Phoebe Bruce Jones, lived on the reservation in Kiowa, Roosevelt Co., Oklahoma, where Sarah died. It would be great to track down all of these elusive relatives. I also have some photos you may be interested in. You can write me at: boekworm@tabletoptelephone.com. Cheryl

Cheryl, The town of Kiowa is located in southern Pittsburg County-- which was within the old Choctaw- not Cherokee, Nation.
There is no "Roosevelt County" in the state of Oklahoma.

You're absolutely right, Chinossa - I goofed! Thanks for the correction. I'll have to check my records to see where Sarah Bruce died. Cheryl

My Mother wes adopted in 1946, so i can relate. Her parents met in a cannery in california. the only record we have is from DSS that says her mother was born around 1921 in Oklahoma of indian and irish descent (tribe not stated). Her father was born in Alabama and was of irish and english descent. My Mom was adopted on the 13th of august 1946 in San Jose CA. Her adoptive parents were John Marion Richard who was born in Roosevelt OK and Claire Catherine Johansen who was born in San Francisco. John was of Indian ancestry but we have no record of his descent either.. Any help on this would help and good luck to you other searchers. Lance Davis

Re: Walker, Carmack, and Bruce Cherokees
Hi Cheryl, I know these are old posts but I hope you are still out there! I grew up with the stories of an Indian woman (always told she was chickasaw) on my Grandmothers,Mother's side. There was a tintype photo of her that even my Mother saw up to the 1960's when it vanished within the family. My G Grandmother Belle Cook O'Neil had either first account memories of this woman and her long black hair, or maybe just from the photo...hard to say now. If it was in person it would have been between 1878-1901 as she moved from Dahlonega to montana in 1900-01 Please email me kelles20@hotmail.com Would love to swap info. Thanks, Kelley
