Would like to find out the mining accidents that took place in Victor Co in 1914 and another accident was in 1916. What was the name of the mines and who were the miners that died.

James Elijah Sturgill died at age of 36 in Victor in 1914. He was a gold miner. His death certificate says he was in a Red Cross Hospital when he died. Family legend says he died in a landslide. In 1910 federal census he lived in Victor with wife named Edith. Her parents lived next door and named James George.

After researching the George family I found a Quincy George who died on June 14, 1916 in Victor from a landslide in a mine. Mining accidents during this period and names of the persons who died should be recorded but I don't know where to find this information.

You might want to check the Teller County website:
www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~coteller/ and look under the resource tab. The museum in Cripple Creek is amazing! They've got an e-mail address that you can write to seeking info. There are also newspaper archives listed that may be helpful to you, but I'm not sure where they are kept, but it may be at one of the libraries in Colorado Springs. The Pikes Peak Genealogical Society in Colorado Springs may be able to help you as well.

I had good luck with the Denver Library online. There is a section on genealogical research which has a lot of info including a listing of pre-1963 mining deaths in Colorado. Not always a lot of detail but it's something. Also the Cripple Creek museum is very helpful - they have some mortuary books too that they will search so if you have the date they should be able to tell you if they have anything.
Good luck!
