Hello,

I've been trying to figure out either out the parents of either of these people for a while, with little luck (Linus was appointed a guardian when he was 15, so not holding my breath there).

Abigail should be easier, but so far I haven't been able to figure her out...at this point, I'm digging through old probate court records looking for a name drop.

Anyone have a guess? Possible red herring: looked at Linus's paperwork from 1844 and his guardian was almost an Ebenezer S. There was an Ebenezer Smith in Chatham, though he didn't seem to have a daughter named Abigail....

Thanks

Just a guess... could the guardian actually have been Ebenezer S. Griffing instead ? There was an Ebenezer Griffing in Middlesex County, he was the perfect age to have been an uncle to Linus. Things indicate this Ebenezer's father was named Samuel.

I'm looking into him harder now, thanks, my only reason for doubting that is that the 'scribe' wrote S at the end of a line and I think it would have looked weird to write Griffing after without breaking the name to the next line. They might not have cared though. Ebenezer Smith has mild connections to people with last names like Gillum and Dickinson and you see those names pop up related to Abigail Griffing's will, which was another reason I thought it was that guy.

I'm still digging through probate records but I'm not finding a smoking gun. At this rate I may eventually pay someone to try to figure this out. Sigh. At some point.

Correction, I meant Ebenezer Griffing's was connected to those families....been looking at too many records.
