I'm searching for the civil war record of James Harvey Mathis.

According to the family story James Harvey volunteered for the war when his wife died in 1860. I'm guessing he might have joined in IA since this is where his wife died..

James Harvey was born September 27, 1817 in Green County, KY. He died in the war.

A James H. MATHIS was a member of the 15th Iowa Infantry but his age does not match your info. However, he could have lied about his age, too.

This person lived in Des Moines and enlisted in Co. B. of the 15th IA Infantry on 15 Oct 1861 at age 31. He died 3 Sep 1862 in Jackson, TN.
