I am seeking information on Samuel Colter
b. ca. 1754, d. 1856 in Perth Ontario,
married Sarah Mason. Children include
Elizabeth, Thomas, John, Joseph, James and
more. Elizabeth moved to and died in Mich

I'd be interested in finding out more. I have a line of COULTERs who came from Ireland to Ontario. The furthest back I have is Hugh COULTER m Maria HAZARD. Hugh was probably born around 1889 in Ontario.

I cannot make a link at this time. I loose
track of the Coulter side in the mid-1800s.
Can you find any reference to Perth or Black Rock?

Well, I think that this will cancel chances of us being from the same family, but I have recently found out that Hugh's parents were Thomas Coulter and Jane Cluff, both born supposedly in Belfast Ireland. Thomas was probably born around the 1850's.

I just happened here so not sure but I have a ggggrandparent Samuel Colter b.1780 in Dromore, County Down, Ire.; m. 1802 to Sarah Livingstone; d 2/10/1856 in Downie, Perth, Ont., Canada. They had a daughter named Elizabeth Ellen Colter, b.1/4/1816 in Scot.; m.William John Nichol in 1837 in Can.; d.11/15/1908 in Bridgehamton, Sanalac, Mi.

I also have a Coulter line from Ireland to Ontario. Here is what I have so far.
Hugh Coulter b ca 1797 Ireland came with family to Lindsay area in Ontario, Durham County.
He had a daughter Christina Coulter b 1838 and it is known that she came to Canada when she was 4 years old. She married John Dunbar in 1856 in Manvers Township, Durham County. They later lived in Holland Township, Grey County. They ended up in the Owen Sound area -- Sydenham Township, Grey County.
Christina and John Dunbar had the following children:

Hugh Dunbar

I found the following in the 1900 Census of Iron Mountain, Dickinson, MI. They were living with William Daisy Laing.

Maria L. Colter, b. Mar 1872 in WI; father from Scotland, mother from Canada. (Colter is her married name; do not have husband's name).
Lloyd Colter, son of Maria, b. Mar 1896 in WI; father from Canada, mother from Wisconsin.

Maria was a niece of William Laing. Ring any bells?
