When I bought my home from my mother I researched the liens that had been against the house to be sure they were all clear myself. I did this because it was going to save me quit a bit of money in lawyers fees if I did it myself. To do this I went to the
Court House in
Wood County and told them what I wanted to do and they showed me to a room filled with books, told me what to do, and I started my search. I found all of the loan papers where my parents had borrowed against the house including the original purchase. This told me who had sold the home to them in the 1950's. Just for fun, I looked to see what they had borrowed against the house and so on back to when the house was first built in 1895. This will work for you as long as no one paid cash for the house when buying it. But even if someone paid cash for the home there should be some sort of deed of sale at the
Court House. Just check with the County
Clerk at the
Court House. It was really interesting to see where people had borrowed against the home and what the money was used for. I found every remodel my parents had done to the home over the years. Happy researching...
