In the 1980's my father found a cousin, Kurt Rettig, in Germany. When they spoke on the phone, Kurt said that his grandmother (perhaps) had always wondered what happened to Mary Marxsen Black and her children. Mary is the daughter of Peter Henry Marxsen and Mary Vetter. My dad and Kurt corresponded and Kurt gave my father a lot of information and some photos. Those photos are in storage now as I am in the process of moving, but I have a photocopy I can find of Katherine Vetter Rettig b 20 July 1820; George Vetter b 17 Nov 1826; Michael Vetter b 1877 and Margaret Rettig Vetter b 1831. I am willing to share information.

I am very glad to reply as I would like a little help. So many of the Vetters seemed to marry other Vetters in my line. .Also, I did not do the research on these people and so I have no place to tell you to go to authenticate this information.

I have an Eva Katharina Vetter b 13 July 1819, Mittershausen, Hesse, Germany married to Johann Nicolas Rettig md 29 Apr 1838, Schlierbach, Hesse, Germany. I know nothing about his parents, but hers were Johann Peter Vetter b 10 Jan 1791 d 16 Mar 1856 Mittershausen, Hesse, Germany. Johann Peter married Mary (unknown) b about 1799 d abt 1852. Their children were Eva Katharina (see above), Anna Maria (1821-1823), Anna Katharina (1823- ), Johann Peter (1825-1847), Johann George (1826-1825) md to Anna Margaretha Rettig (1827- ), Peter Vetter (1828-1919 Illinois) md to Eva Katharina Spilger 1834-1908 Illinois), Michael Vetter, my 3ggrandfather, (1830-1889 Illinois) md to Maria Elizabeth Vetter (1834-1888 Illinois), Elizabeth Vetter (1832-1863) and Eva Katharina Vetter (1836). As usually a child's name was not used twice unless the first sibling died before the second same-name child was born, I cannot account tor 2 Eva Katharina Vetters in this family.

Then somewhere in the tree on my 3ggrandmother's family is Anna Maria Spilger (1805 Bonsweiher, Hesse-Darmstadt-1894 Illinois md to Johann Ludwig Vetter (1805 Hammelbach, Starkenburg-1843 Hammelbach.) Anna next married Valentin Muehlfeld came to the US in 1856 where he died and she lived with her children. Her information comes from her obituary Aldeo Times 24 Feb 1894. I was given a copy of this by another person I am in touch with. She lives in Illinois and I live in Arizona, so her information is much better documented.

If you can receive a jedcom and I had an email address I could send it to, I would be glad to send you what I have and if you have proof, or even hints of corrections, I would be very grateful, especially with sources. This whole email is probably overload, for which I apologize, but I hope somehow we can help each other. And it would be very nice to find another relative.
Thanks, Liz

Hi Liz, I did 4.5 hours work on this. Briefly J Ludwig Vetter and A M Spilger are the parents of Maria Eliz Vetter, wife of Michael Vetter b 1830. /// I have Anna Marg Rettig b 1827 in my tree. ///J P Vetter b 1791 (as I have him) is married to a SPILGER. I had J Geo Vetter b 1826 with no parents. Are you familiar with RootsWeb? You mention Anna m V Muehlfeld. What is Anna maiden name, who is first spouse? Jim Rettig, jwr 184 @ aol .com

I double space between paragraphs. Perhaps you didn't see the second and third paragraphs with the information about Anna M Muehlfeld, or perhaps the rest of the email got lost in space. Before I retype it all again, could you please let me know if you got those paragraphs? I know often people think I am finished with the big space when I just keep going and going, like the Energizer Bunny. Thanks, Liz

I just realized I have the obit for Anna Maria Spilger Vetter Muehlfeld typed into my genealogy program:
Obituary from the Aledo Times 24 Feb 1894. "Mrs. Anna M Spilger Vetter Muehlfeldt of Marston died February 23, 1894 of paralysis and old age. Anna M. Spilger was born in Bronsweiher, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, October 05, 1805. At the age of 14 [1819] she was confirmed and joined the Lutheran Church. In 1827 she was married to Lutwig [sic] Vetter. To this union there were six children born: Lewis Vetter of Red Oak, Iowa; John P Vetter of Buffalo Prairie; George deceased, Elizabeth deceased; George P Vetter in Iowa; and Adam, a son that died in Germany at age 5. Lutwig Vetter died in 1842, leaving widow and 5 children to mourn. In 1844 she was united in marriage to Volentine Muehlfeldt. Unto this union one son was born; John, who now resides in Hamlet. In 1856, Volentine and Anna M Muehlfeldt left the old country and sailed for America. They settled in Rock Island County where they resided until Mr. M's death in 1862. Since his death she has lived with her children. After the death of her son George, she continued to stay with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Catharine Vetter, until 4 years ago (1890) when she went to Iowa to stay with Lewis Vetter. Last fall, (1893) she came back to Marston and has made her home with Catharine Vetter until her death. She has 34 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. "
