I am trying to confirm the date of birth, and the names of his parents, of my maternal Grandfather, Worden W. Conley. I also have seen his name listed as Willie Worden, Worden William, and William Worden Conley. I have his date of birth as 10 April, 1888 in Minnora, Calhoun County, WV. His date of death as 30 August 1941 or 1942. He was married to Elsie E. Dobbins on 10 December 1912 – maybe in Braxton County. On his headstone his name is shown as Worden W Conley.

The information I have indicates he was the son of Absolum Conley (b. 17 Oct 1861, d. 11 Dec 1931) from Minnora, Calhoun County, WV. My information indicates his mother was Mary L. Sterrett (b. 1821, d. 28 May 1905. However, I am not certain the maiden name of his mother is correct.

My records further indicates that Absolum’s parents were Isaac Conley b. 25 Dec 1818(Cabell County), d. 08 Jan 1894. Once again, I have run across conflicting names for the mother’s name. I have seen it listed as Martha M. Stassett (b. 1821, d. 28 May, 1905) and I have also seen Absolum’s mother listed as Martha H. Bailey.

Can anyone help me resolve and confirm this conflicting information?

Did you check the West Virginia Division of Culture and History records? I gave a quick look there, my family is from Calhoun, and it shows a death certificate for Warden William Conley, date of death: 11 Aug 1941, at 54 years of age. The certificate only states that he was born in West Virginia. His father is listed as A B Conley of West Virginia and his mother is listed as Mary Sterrett of West Virginia. The informants name was Leone Clines of Akron, Ohio. It shows that he lived in Sutton, Holly District, Braxton County, West Virginia and died there as well. He was buried in the Gillispie Cemetery. The funeral director was Stockert of Flatwoods, West Virginia. It shows that he died from prostate cancer and he suffered with it for about 6 mos before he passed. The certificate shows him as being married so his wife had not passed yet. Does this help you any? I am sorry the death certificate is not more helpful usually they are.

I could not stand not knowing more so I pulled up their marriage license as well. Warden W Conley, 21 years of age, born in Braxton County, West Virginia married Elsie E Dobbins, 16 years of age, born in Braxton County, West Virginia married on 15 Dec 1912 by G R Rose at the U B (United Bretheran, I think that is what that stands for) Church in Fairview, West Virginia. This information also came from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.
