I am trying to follow the land records for my gg grandfather, Lyman Kenyon. Census records document that sometime between 1860 and 1870, he moved from Lafayette County to Arcadia, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He purchased a parcel of land in Trempealeau County. What are some ways for me to obtain a copy of these land records, short of my driving from California to Wisconsin to get them?

All suggestions are appreciated.

I am aware of this site, but I am appreciative of your response to my inquiry. In fact, the records that I made reference to was from a similar site, but included Trempealeau County.

Hello Marilyn,

I would recommend checking the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website at http://www.raogk.org/faq-requesters.htm (read the guidelines and then there's a link at the bottom to find a volunteer). I've had the volunteer for Trempealeau County do some courthouse and library lookups for me. He's a great help and goes out of his way to find information for you. You do need to reimburse him for mileage, copies, postage, etc. Small price to pay for all that he does.

Regards,
Bob Smith

Thanks for your reply. I did attempt to go through the route of the Random Acts of Kindness, but the person to whom you are referring did not come through for me. I'm glad to hear that you had better luck.

Since the time I first made the request, I have discovered that Lyman Kenyon received a land patent from the Bureau of Land Management for the period of time I was searching. This name had been misspelled by the BLM and listed as Lyman Kingon, so it had slipped past me on earlier searches. As it turns out, this is the land ownership I was seeking.

So, all worked out in the end.

You might try Buffalo County, ( Glencoe Township) not Trempealeau County. Arcadia is on the border of the two counties, often confused.
A son of Lyman and Melissa Kenyon; Charles, listed as Glencoe Buffalo Co married a Matilda Hensel

That is a very good idea. I will give that one a try.

Thank you!
