Need help in searching Parker in the Sunderland/Darlington area. My dad was born in Darlington (George), my granddad (peter) and great granddad (Richard) was born in Sunderland. I have Richard Parker (great granddad) born in 1848 married to Mary. I have them living in Monkwearmouth in 1881.
Any help would be appreciated as I have no idea what I'm doing

Hi Wayne
Is the attached your family?

If you only have found them in 1881 then I guess you may not have subscribed to a site like Ancestry or Findmypast. I think you can try both for free for a couple of weeks.

You may also find these sites useful

FreeBMD has the civil registrations from when they started in July 1837 up to around 1940/50ish.

Hi Bryan

Thanks for the info, I am a member of Ancestry just not very good at using the site (lol). I have that document that you attached and yes that's my family but how do I find Richard Parker's (born 1848 Sunderland) parents and Marys madden name. When I do a search for Richard in the 1851 census, I get 1 match in Sunderland but how do I know it's the right Richard?

Wayne,
You need to collect up the facts bit by bit.

If you can find Richard and Mary in 1911 then that will tell you how long they have been married for and then you can probably find the marriage in FreeBMD. The marriage certificate will give you her maiden name and the names of the couples fathers and occupations.

Altenatively you can guess that the couple were probably married about the time of the birth of the eldest child and thus locate the marriage in FreebMD.

You can also get the birth certificate for any of the children to find out Mary's maiden name.

Find Richard PARKER in 1871 and then in 1861. Leaping back to 1851 could get you on the wrong track.

You have Richards age so you may be able to get his birth certificate. Then you may be able to find his parents marriage, If it is before 1837 then try Familyearch
https://www.familysearch.org/

It takes time and a little money. The telly program "Who do you think you are" makes it look easy but some paid researcher spent weeks and a fair bit of cash to do the background stuff and they do not show you that.

Bryan
PS
You can use Familysearch later than 1837. You can see the baptism of George Henry PARKER in Hartlepool and this may be the marriage of his parents:

groom's name: Richard Wharton Parker
groom's birth date: 1847
groom's age: 25
bride's name: Mary Jane Sayers
bride's birth date: 1852
bride's age: 20
marriage date: 26 Aug 1872
marriage place: Southwick, Durham, England
groom's father's name: Richard Wharton Parkes
bride's father's name: William Sayers
groom's marital status: Single
bride's marital status: Single
indexing project (batch) number: M01318-2

Wayne,
You might want to buy a few credits for Durham Records Online.
Will cost you about a pound each to view the fuller details on these two records which I think are likley to be your family.
Burial Sunderland of Richard Wharton PARKER born c. 1846 buried 1846. Abode 20 Coronation Street.

Cemetery Registers Sunderland Richard Wharton PARKER born c. 1812 buried 1866. Abode 8 South Johnson Street.

This is jumping ahead of course as you may not yet have proved beyond reasonable doubt that Richard Wharton PARKER was your ancester.
Richard PARKER is quite a common name.

I had a quick look through the census records and it seems to fit but I've seen some realy stupid family trees where someone has grabbed the first likely link.

Thanks for the advice Bryan, I'm almost certain that the two Richards that you have mentioned are my relations.

Hi Wayne

Mary Sayers is the daughter of William Sayers and Ann Ford, they also had another daughter called Margaret and a son called William, William died young and I have lost track of Margaret. Ann also had a son to a previous relationship he was called Robert Curtis and he is where I descend from.

If you want any help let me know.

Regards
Joanne.
