I am researching the Weston surname in Western or Central PA.

John Raymond Weston (1906-1979) is my Great Grandfather. He was born in PA and died in Greensburg, Pa. He was a Coal Miner who lost his leg in a mining accident. Where can I find mining records?

His father, my GG Grandather from what I found is John William Weston born 1884 in Clearfield, PA.

My GGG Grandfather according to the 1900 Census is Curtis W. Weston who married Arminda Jane. (Who in later censuses goes by Jane) In 1910 they moved from Cambria Co. PA to Indiana County, PA-If I am right.

I can't seem to find anything further. Can anyone guide me in the right direction? I can't find any earlier censues of the Weston side as well as birth, marriage or anything.

There is a Curtis "Westin" on the 1860 census in Snyder, Blair County, Pennsylvania. The age is about right -- he was born about 1857. (The 1900 Cambria PA census lists him as born in 1855.). In fact, there is only one Curtis Westin/Weston/Westen in all of PA in 1860 -- the one in Snyder, Blair County, PA. See
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...
The fact that Curtis Westin's oldest son was named John is another possible clue. The John Westin on the 1860 census is listed as born in Maryland. However, the same family appears again in Synyder, Blair, PA on the 1870 census, but here John Westen is listed as born in VA For some reason, Curtis is not listed.
I'm not positive this is the father of your Curtis W. Weston -- I'll let you know if I find anything else.

John Raymond Weston (13 Aug 1906-June 1979) Married Leona M Smitley of Pennsylvania.(10 Aug 1911- May 1983) and died in Latrobe, PA. Family called Leona "Boo" The names dates of these two I know are pretty accurate.

John William Weston I believe married Mary Smith born about 1889 and 1910 census, where they resided in Fayette County, PA, which Mary was born in PA along with both of her parents.

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Thank you for your help in advance. This side of my family is a huge mystery. We have heard stories of a possible name change to Weston and that we have history in WV. So, by you saying VA which would have been WV prior to 1863 correct would make sense. Please if you find anything else let me know. Thank you so much!

You may already know that Curtis Weston died in 1910.
He is listed among the burials at the Union/Salem Cemetery, Hastings, Cambria County, PA

There is a photo of his grave on Findagrave.com

You might want to order a copy of his death certificate from Pennsylvania Vital Records. Cost- $10.00. Hopefully, it will list his parents' names. See
http://www.n2genealogy.com/pennsylvania/pa-records-vital.htm...
Scoll down to "How to order...."
There is another tree on Ancestry that list's Amanda Jane's maiden name as Legget. See http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9645512/person/-767122107

The PA dept of health has a death index, on which I found a listing for Curtis Westin, December 27, 1910, Indiana County, State File No 120994. See
http://www.health.state.pa.us/indices/indices%20-%20death/19...
This site mentions a $9.00 fee for certified copies. and only $3.00 for non-certified copies. See: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/pub...

On the 1850 census for Snyder, Blair, PA, Curtis Westin's brothers were Frank and James. Then on the 1870 census for the same location, another brother, John Westen is listed, born about 1860-61. If you look at the 1880 census for Duncan, Tioga County, PA, you'll see what appears to be all four brothers living there -- same names, and all of their birth dates correspond to those in the Blair County Census for 1860 and 1870. I'm guessing that both of their parents, John and Phebe Westin/Westen/Weston died between 1870 and 1880.

Still looking.

Thank you. I have been so confused about the Duncan/Tioga census and the Indiana Co Census and if they were actually my family or not. Thank you again!! :)
