PIERCE COUNTY CALL; Pierce, Nebraska; Thursday, February 10, 1921
WILLIAM KORTH AT REST.
The last sad rites over the remains of William Korth were held at Zion's Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, the same being in charge of the pastor, Rev. M. F. Scheips. Burial was had in the Lutheran cemetery east of town. In spite of the inclement weather outside a large company of old neighbors and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to this sturdy old Pierce county pioneer.
William Korth was born at Graefenhagen, Pommernania, Germany, on April 18th, 1846 and died at Pierce, Nebraska, Tuesday evening, February 1st, 1921, aged 74 years, 9 months and 14 days. He grew to young manhood in Germany. He came to the United States with his parents in 1866. The family first settled in Wisconsin. In 1871 he moved to Pierce county and took up a homestead near Pierce. He was united in marriage to Miss Wilhelmina Paul, February 20, 1874. Here the couple experienced all the trials and tribulations of the early Nebraska pioneers--blizzards, short crops and grasshoppers. But it took more than this to subdue the ever longing desire for this couple for a home of their own and with faith undaunted they labored and loved until the dark clouds of adversity gave way to the brightness of prosperity.
Seven children came to bless this union--4 sons and 3 daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Henry Fischer passed away a few years ago. Besides the aged wife the following children survive: Robert, August, Ernst, William, Mrs. Ernest Fischer and Mrs. Emil Scheer. Deceased is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Korth was a resident of Pierce for about nineteen years--the old homestead east of Pierce being occupied by his son, Ernest.
Mr. Korth was confirmed a member of the Lutheran church in Germany and always lived the life of a true christian.

"GRANDMA" KORTH TAKEN BY DEATH
Early Pioneer and Oldest Resident of Pierce Dies Early Wednesday Morning.
This community was deeply saddened Wednesday morning to learn of "the passing" of Mrs. Wilhelmina Korth, Pierce's earliest and most dearly beloved settler and resident. "Grandma" Korth, as she was called with veneration by all, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Fischer at 4 o'clock Wednesday morning. Had she lived until January 10, she would have reached her 91st birthday.
Born in Strelowhagen Kreis, Naugard, Germany, January 10, 1850 she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Paul. In 1872 when she was 22 years of age she came to Pierce county to keep house for her brother, Fred Paul, on his homestead near Hadar. She was a practical nurse and cared for many of the early pioneer families, as is those days doctors were few and far between.
On Febr. 20, 1874 she was united in marriage to Wm. Korth in Pierce. The ceremony was preformed by Judge A.J. Babcock, the first county judge of Pierce county. The couple began housekeeping on the homestead 6 miles east of Pierce, where their son, Ernest now lives. There they made their home until 34 years ago when they retired and moved to Pierce.
Seven children were born to this union, Robert of McLean, Mrs. Ernest Fischer, August, William, Ernest and Mrs. Emil Scheer, all of Pierce. There are 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Henry Fischer died twenty-four years ago. Her husband preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1921. Since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Fischer.
"Grandma" Korth, as she was lovingly called by both old and young, was a friend to all, nothing pleased her more than to have her friends and especially the children call on her for a visit. Her birthdays the last few years were looked forward to with special delight when her children and other relatives and friends gathered at her home. Mrs. Korth enjoyed reading and also took an interest in the news of the day. She spent a great share of her time reading her bible and religious papers. She looked forward eagerly to the visits of her pastor, Rev. M.F. Scheips.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, Dec. 13, at 1:00 at the home and at 1:30 at Zion Lutheran church, with Rev. M.F. Scheips in charge of he services.

A. FISCHER LAID AT REST
Funeral services for Mrs. Amanda Fischer, 72, who passed away Sunday, January 16, were conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 at Zion Lutheran church. Rev. C.M. Steging was in charge of the alter service and Rev. M.F. Scheips of Norfolk delivered the sermon.
Beautiful floral tributes were banked about the casket and many memorial wreaths were given in memory of Mrs. Fischer. Rev. Scheips based his comforting words on the text found in Genesis 149, 18, "I have waited for Thy salvation, O Lord". The words were also the name of a German prayer book which Mrs. Fischer had used during her life and which had been used by her mother before her. It had been a source of comfort and hope to her and she read it daily along with her Bible and hymn book. Mrs. Fischer was a lifelong Christian and a person who enjoyed helping others less fortunate than herself. She often took young folks and children into her home and fed and clothed them. She was always ready to help a sick neighbor and friend and spent many long hours sitting at the bedside of sick friends. She gave generously of her worldly goods to charitable institutions and missions supported by her church. Hymns sung by the congregation included, "Be Still, My Soul" and "O, Sacred Head, Now Wounded".
Burial took place in the Lutheran cemetery east of pierce with the following serving as pallbearers, Fred Trampe, Wm. Woochman, George Buckendahl, Carl Schulz, E.G. Schellpeper and Edw. Fullner.
Mrs. Fischer, who had been in failing health, slipped and fell at her home on Saturday morning and was taken to the hospital in Norfolk, where she passed away Sunday noon at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 5 days.
Amanda Korth was born July 11, 1876, on a farm northeast of Pierce, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Korth, pioneer settlers of Pierce county. She had spent her entire life in this community and was early baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She was married on March 26, 1894 to Ernest Fischer at St. John's Lutheran church east of Pierce. To this union two children were born, Nora and William. Mr. and Mrs. Fischer observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary quietly at their home in Pierce on March 26, 1944, as at that time Mr. Fischer was in failing health.
He passed away less than a year later on February 15, 1945. Nora passed away in 1916.
She leaves to mourn her passing one son, William and her daughter-in-law of Salem, Oregion, and three grandchildren, Mrs. Lois George, Vancouver, B.C., Canada; Norma and Hillman, also of Salem, Ore. Also surviving are three brothers, Robert Korth, McLean; Ernest Korth, Madison, and William Korth of Pierce and one sister Mrs. Emil Scheer of Pierce and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Present from out-of-town for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. William Fischer, Salem, Ore.; the Rev. and Mrs. M.F. Scheips, Norfolk; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Koehler, Robert Korth, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Schnoor all of McLean. Road and weather conditions prevent many coming for a distance.
