I am a descendant of the HEINSMAN's who came to
Florida from
Pennsylvania via
Maryland circa 1768. In the records of the St. Augustine Basilica, I found that Philip
WEIDMANN was born circa 1783 in the village of Beristadt near Mainz, Pflaz, Germany and was the son of Carl
WEIDMANN and Paula LANDERFAIN. Philip and Maria Barbara
Antonia HEINSMAN were married at the Basilica by Rev. Fr. Michael O'REILLY on July 27, 1804. By 1814, they resided in the coastal area beyond St. Augustine and in 1815, Philip was granted 400 acres on land "bounded on the west by
Turnbull Creek and south by the road to Picolata." He was granted an additional 150 acres that same year which was considered the proper quota for himself and his family. Philip served as a militiaman during the 1812-13 revolution for which service he received another 150 acres of land. Philip's entire estate was an enlarged version of his original
Turnbull Creek property and, today, would be located about 3/4 miles east of Bakersville on County Road 208. On February 6, 1840, Philip Jr. and the widow, Maria, were appointed co-administrators of Philip's estate thus indicating his death probably late in 1839 or early 1840.
