I am looking for any Martins that may have ancestors (male or female) that migrated from Towednack in Cornwall approx. 1856. My great grandfather came to Australia but others from his family of 18 may have gone to other countries as I can only trace 2 of his siblings. Any information would be appreciated.

Martins is a portuguese surname. In the beginning of portuguese nationality in the XII century all the surnames had the fathers first name with an S.
So Martins was the son of Martin, like Rodrigues was the son of Rodrigo, Nunes of Nuno,Alvares of Alvaro, Henriques of Henrique and so on.

This name written like this has a portuguese origin. In Spain (Kingdoms of Lion and Castilla they had the same connections between the name of the father and the sons but with EZ. In Spain the son of Martin was Martinez

I have just started tracing my mother's birth family, the only known member being her mother who is documented as Violet Grace Martins who gave birth to a daughter (my mother - formerly Christine Cheeseman adopted by Vera Hockman) on 16th March 1940. I believe she worked in London in a cafe or theatre and may have had a liaison with a member of the Hockman family which would explain a number of incidents that happened as a result. We are interested to find out about the missing members of our family. My mother is now 60, I am 40 this year and I (as an only child) have two daughters. It would be great to know anything about any of the Martins family if we can trace them and pull together the missing links.

Mt gt.gt. grandparents John and Hannah (nee Dryden) Martin left Towednack about 1865 and moved to Pontlottyn Glamorgan. Thier youngest son Stephen went with them as did my gt.grand mother Eliza, she married Arthur Martin from Ludgvan. They also ended up in Pontlottyn where my mother (their grand daughter) was born in 191.
