I live in the UK, CEARNS is my maiden name. There are very few of this name in UK. My grandparents were James William Holme CEARNS and Ellen CEARNS (nee PAINTER). The was a big family starting in the 1800s, and spreading outwards to 11 offspring in the next generation (my father). There is a family name of James William going back 3 generations from the oldest son to the oldest son. (I think this has now stopped as the oldest son (my brother has 4 daughters and no male offspring!). My brother however lives in California now though is of British origin. Anyway if it is of any value, I am Mary CEARNS I am 57 and live in Birmingham UK. I am an Accountant. I have 3 daughters - married and two grandsons. My father James William Holme CEARNS is dead, but my Mother is 87 and still living.

Mary Cearns of English/Irish parents?
To Mary, from Mary, about Mary -
I hope you read my post about Mary Cearns who married John Joseph Meyers in New Orleans. According to census reports, Mary's father was born in England, and her mother born in Ireland. Mary was born (probably) in the 1860-s, supposedly in Louisiana. Although her dad was born in England, I presume that does not necessarily make him "English" as far as ethnic descendancy goes.
Since your family is large, do you have any indication of moves to the United States in the mid 1800-s. Again, with a lot of presumption, it would seem our Mary's parents would have been born by the mid 1840-s at the latest, and somewhat no earlier than about 1820 on the part of her mother.
I will be at one of the LDS libraries next week. Hopefully I will find more details on this family at that time. Meanwhile, I certainly appreciate any possible leads. Thanks a lot!

I am James William Cearns. I was born in London in 1940 to James William Cearns who was born in London in 1902. I have a picture of my father as a baby with his father, his Grandfather and his Great Granfather. My mother said they were "four James William Cearns". I am not sure that the Great Grandfather was a James William. They were all in East London and founded the West Ham Football club which was rescently sold. (Martin Cearns was still a part owner) Hope this helps you James Cearns from Orange County, California, USA
