I will stop by the library and the paper office this week and see what I can find. If you would send me you email I can send you pictures of them off of my digital camera. Alot of paper places are not letting you make copies becasue the binding process is so expensive.

RELAND YOUNG STRICKEN: JAP PRISONER IN WAR
Reland E Young, 61, resident of Rathdrum for more than half a centure and one of four Kootenai county men who survived nearly four years of imprisionment by the Japanses, during World War II, died suddenly Saturday.
Mr. Young suffered a fatal heart attack at the U.S. Forest Service camp where he was working near Porthill, Idaho, at the Canadian boundary.
At the time of his death he was bridge construction foreman, working on a project in the Kaniksu National Forest. He had been with the forest service for approximately 20 years.
Mr. Young, with his son, Edwin, Cliff Malanya of Rathdrum and O. B. Tomlinson of Coeur d' Alene were employed by Morrison-Knudsen Co. of Boise in construction work on Wake Island when they were taken prisoners by the Japanese.
They left for the island in the fall of 1941, before the outbreak of the war, and were taken prisoners Dec. 23 following the Pearl Harbor attack.
Mr. Young was among the prisoners moved to Shanghai the following Jan. 12, and later was transferred to Pieping, Manchuria, southern Korea and later to Tokyo.
He returned home early in October of 1945, following the Japanese surrender and in an interview at that time said "all the horror stories about Nipponses treatment of prisoners are undoubtedly true. I have seen enough to guarantee this".
Later Mr. Young was re-instated with the forest service and continued his work until his death.
Born at Puyallup, Wash, May 19, 1892, Mr. Young was six years of age when his family moved to Rathdrum. He had made his home there since.
Survivors are his widow, Esther, at home; four sons, Edwin J and Eugene Young of Post Falls, John Young of Seattle, and Richard Louis Young of Rochester, NY; a daughter Mrs. Robert Ball of Great Falls, Mont; a brother, Marvel Young of Twin Lakes, two sisters, Mrs. Idena Bacon and Mrs. Dorothy Noce of Seattle and several grandchildren.
The Cassedy Funeral Home at Rathdrum is in charge of funeral services.
Funeral services will include the Rosary to be recited Tuesday night at 8 o'clock at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic church at Rathdrum and Requiem Mass to be said Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the church. The Rev. A. V. Dulberg will officiate and burial will be in Pinegrove cemetery at Rathdrum.
