Last year we visited Trefeglwys and found the headstone of my g grandmother in the churchyard opposite The Red Lion public house.Unfortunately I have lost the inscription I jotted down and the photo I have is very poor so cannot make out dates etc: Her name was Elizabeth Hughes and buried with her was a child called David Tudor.I believe there are several churchyards in the area so do not know the name of this one.Have looked at the Trefeglwys site but cannot find it.Would be grateful for any help .

Hello Anne,
I have the book of memorial inscriptions for St Michael's Church, Trefeglwys (produced by the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society). Here is a transcript of the gravestone...
"In the midst of life we are in death"
Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Hughes of Lower Bwlchyllyn in this parish, who departed this life 4th November 1867 aged 43 years.
Also of David Tudor, son of the said Thomas and Elizabeth Hughes, who died 4th May 1860 aged 15 months.
Therese.

Hi Therese
Thank you for replying and taking the time to look up the inscription.Have been trying to trace my grandmothers family for many years (she was born in Trefeglwys but I cannot find a birth cert). The dates on the headstone rule out Elizabeth Hughes as her mother altho I have the correct family.I will look into joining the Mont.Genealogical Soc.as I may find some more clues in their publications.
Thanks once again
Ann

This is interesting that they have a book with inscriptions from St Michaels' Trefeglwys in it. I would be interested in getting a copy of this book..How does one find out where to get it? Thank you.
Did Thomas and Elizabeth Hughes have a son Thomas Hughes who maarried Anne Jones?

If you type "Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society Publications" into Google, it brings up their page with a huge number of booklets of all kinds-a vast and very interesting source of information. It tells you how much they cost, how to get hold of them and where from. Hope you find it OK.
Therese.

Thomas & Elizabeth did not have a son called Thomas although funnily enough they had a daughter(from Elizabeth's first marriage} called Anne Jones. It seems after Elizabeth died Thomas went on to marry his stepdaughter also Elizabeth. My grandmother was born whilst Thomas was supposedly a widower and altho I have tried to find her birth cert for many years can find no trace of her.I hope you have more luck with you search.
Best wishes.
