I'm wondering if Lucy Baker was married before, and if she was a Lucy Cooper first. Just a thought.....Or was Jonathan P. Powell Married before Possibly to a Cooper.....and she died. Or what if Peter had another daughter, who married a Powell and gave birth to Jonathan Powell....and maybe after giving birth. These are just questions, and are not proven in anyway...just theory.......

Though I'm not sure about their connection to Peter Cooper at the moment, I can possibly give some insight into the relationship of Jonathan P. Powell and John J. Sargent.

Jonathan P. Powell who married Lucy Baker was the son of James F. Powell (son of Jonathan Powell and Anna Rice) and Martha Jones, who was the daughter of Dr. John Jones and Elizabeth Mosley. Martha Jones' sister, Nancy W. Jones, married John J. Sargent. John and Nancy Jones Sargent where my gr gr grandparents.

Maybe there is a clue in this. Possibly there was a Powell/Cooper marriage somewhere. I'll do some more checking. I believe that James F. Powell's family is listed on the LDS site at familysearch.org.

I too would like to know how J. P. Powell is related to Peter. I have several documents for Peter Cooper, with his name on it. Here are some of the documents his name is mentioned:
1. 1812 Pension file for Peter Cooper several time J.P. Powell and one other place his name is James Powell.

2. Deed Book "U" p.p. 367-369 Peter's Land diveded amongst his kids, and grandkids.

Two other names that also come up are J. J. Sargent, and J. H. Grant

Does anyone out there know who these men are, and why do they show up on Documents for Peter Cooper SR????????

How is J. P. Powell b. 1849 connected to Peter Cooper (1784-1875)? He was one of several people who deeded land to Robert Housley on Oct. 1880. The land being transfered was land which they had inherited from their father Peter Cooper. J. P. Powell married Lucy Baker on Jan. 18, 1879, in Campbell County. She died Apr. 1880. Who were parents of J. P. Powell?

The J.H. Grant you are talking about is probably James Hamilton Grant, born 1810 in TN, and died in 1893 in Campbell County TN. The Grants and the Coopers lived pretty close to each other it seems. James Hamilton Grant was the son of James H. Grant born in 1754 in Conn. and died in 1824 in Campbell County TN. Peter Cooper was my 3rd great grandfather, and John Grant, James H. Grants brother, was my 4th great grandfather.

Hi Kevin,
James H.Grant 1754 CONdo.do you know who he was married to before? You mentioned that the Grants, and Coopers were neighbors. Could there be connection through marriage? I'm just curious to why Peter would have his son James H. Grant 1810 on his estate, if they were only friends. It's possible that they were just close friends, but still I wonder..if Peter might have had a sister that was once married to the older James H. Grant, and and maybe the 1810 James H. Grant was actually a nephew thats why his son, being a nephew recieved benifit from Peter's estate. Just a theory with no proof. I wish there were more documents available at this time frame. Thank you for the imput.

Hey Cathi,
This is the information that I have, and it was gathered from different people on the internet. So I cannot verify any of it.
James H. Grant, who was born in 1754 married Abigail Moore,
they had James Hamilton Grant b. 1810. I do not know if they had anymore children or not. James Hamilton Grant married Margaret Pettit, then married Catherine Comer April 2, 1855, b. 1833 d. April 15, 1900. James and Margaret had one child James Hamilton Grant Jr., he married Lucy A. Standley. James and Catherine had 7 children.
Peter Cooper married Clara Ridenour, and John Grant married her sister Mary Ridenour. I do not know if that helps or not. Peter Cooper had a daughter name Catherine, perhaps that is "Catherine Comer" but the dates are different on both of them. Catherine Cooper is listed as being born in 1823 and died November 11, 1895 in Mt. Pleasant TN. I am probably grabbing at straws. I hope some of this helps, and I did not confuse you.

Jane,
I have a Peter Cooper b/ 1786 who married Clara Ridenour b/ 1799. They had a daughter Barbara Cooper. Barbara Cooper b/1817 married Jacob SHarp b/ 1814. Elizabeth Betty Sharp is the daughter of Jacob and Barbara. This might not help you at all but I had these dates and names. I don't even know of J.P. Powell. I hope this might help. Angie

I don't have my documents handy, but when the estate of Peter Cooper was settled, some of the children were in Missouri. They granted powers of attorney to individuals in Campbell County. I believe J. P. Powell was one of those people. THis information is in some of the documents surrionding the sale of the land.
