Ellis Line of Scott Co. TN
In 1997 I posted a message asking if anyone knew the name of the wife of James Ellis of Scott. Just wanted to let other family members know that the name has been found. Sarah Isom was the lady who married James Ellis. He was only married once. Some people have listed James Ellis as marrying a second time to Sarah Rutherford. I excepted their statement until it was proven by military pension papers that he only was married once to Sarah Isom. James Ellis was born 1796 in Knox Co. TN. His father was Robert Ellis born 1760 in VA.
James Ellis and Sarah Isom were married on Dec.13, 1813 at New River, Campbell Co. TN. James died Sept. 9, 1854. Sarah filed for pension of James Ellis who entered the war of 1812. The pension was rejected in the year 1876, due to the fact that James' name did not show on the rolls.

I am researching the Ellis family in Scott County. How are you tied to this tree? You are correct about Sarah Isom.

Hi All,

I too am searching for information on the Ellis Family from Scott County. I always wondered about that Sarah Rutherford. Thank you for that bit of information. I am related through James's son James and Mahulda. Their son Truman married Martha Ann Marcum and they had several children which one was my great grandfather John Freeman who had my grandfather Delbert. I hope that we can get together on this and share information. I have quite a bit on Truman and Martha and on down. Let me know.

I too am researching the Ellis line. I am related thru Jane Ellis who married Frederick West. Do you know much about the West line marrying into the Ellis line? Do you know if there is any indian blood in the Ellis line? Please contact me.
Thanks,
Sue

By any chance did your Martha Ann also have a son named Fred Ellis? He drowned in 1929.

What pension application, and proven how?

I have looked over this Isom story, and by every measure I can imagine, it is preposterous. Every place online I have seen has her born in 1786, and dying in 1899.

Really? Ripe old age of 113, eh?
Ten years older than her husband, eh?
Had multiple kids born to her when she was in her FIFTIES, did she?

Uhm...no thanks. I think I'll prefer Rutherford to this nonsense, and I haven't even seen the Rutherford claims. But they can't be as bad as this. This is CLEAR ERROR.

Furthermore, I looked over the 1812 pension applications volumes at the library, and there were no Isom, Isam, Ishom, or Isham related to ANY James Ellis that could be this one.

Could someone produce these pension applications materials, so that we could identify the nature/origin of the error?
