Looking for information on Hugh Montgomery. He Was my 4th gr.grandfather. He and his son Hugh, spent some time in Campbell Co. Either he or his son gave 60 acres of land to the town. He aquired the lower Moriavian land grant which he willed to his daughters Rebecca and Rachel. Rebecca married Gen. James Wellborn a senator of N.C. for 27 years. Rachel married Montfort Stokes Govenor of N.C. Wellborn and Stokes lived in Wilkesboro.

I'm looking for a Hugh L. MONTGOMERY who lived in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee in the 1830s and 1840s (Claiborne county). I believe he somehow wound up in Arkansas in the 1850s, but don't know much about him except that he possibly married Sarah Lenore BLAKE. I believe they might have been from North Carolina, but am not sure. I believe he was born sometime around 1780-1790. Do you know anything about him? His daughter, Armilda Jane MONTGOMERY, married Rufus Taylor LIGHTFOOT

It is not likely that any land was given to town (La Follete) in that period.
There was NO town then. It was simply a very sparsly populated area where the farmers grew wheat and so on.
It was known only as Big Creek Gap until early 1900's when two Men named LaFollette came and mined for ore which really opened the whole area to the outside world. The town was named for them. Their roots are in Indiana and Wisc.
Town has really not recovered as I see it since the LaFollete's left.
You may want to see you doc's. on any land left to town as I believe this is incorrect.

Hugh Montgomery Jr. sold the land for the city of Jacksboro to the commissioners for $5,000 in 1808. A copy of the indenture/deed is on file in Jacksboro. This was originally part of a land grant from the state of North Carolina given to Stokley Donnelson. Hugh Sr. died in the late 1700's in Salisbury, N.C. I am seeking information on the family of Hugh Montgomery Jr. My GGGrandmother was Mary Euphoria Montgomery and believe she is the granddaughter of Hugh Jr. Am willing to share any information I have and would appreciate any thing you might have that would help determine who the parents were of Mary.
