My grandfather was Pedro Diaz Kuilan, from Baymon, PR.
I understand that his grandmother was from England and arrived in Puerto Rico with her husband. I am currently gathering information as to there names. I do agree with you, I also think the origin fo the name is Irish.

I just found my great-great grandfather in Puerto Rico last name Cuilan. Early 1800. Are you looking in Puerto Rico?

the only kuilan's I know live in vega alta (barrioa) espinosa.the name i think was spelled Quilan first. if you log on to familysearch.com you will find birth cert, marriage,and death certificates with the name Kuilan and you will find that in the 1800 the name was spelled with a Q. look in vega alto, Puerto Rico.
