I have a photo which shows a woman of about 60,
taken in Pittsfield Maine around 1900. The back of the photo says that she
is the mother of O. Cookson. Grandmother of Raymond Cookson,
Great Grandmother of Gloria Raye Cookson.
Any relatives?

Rebecca Patterson

I believe that these are relatives of my husbands.
His grandfather was Orval (or Oral) Cookson,
married to Evelyn Gordon. They also had a
son by the name of Raymond. Albert Cookson
is a family name along with Gloria. Most of
these children belonging to Orval/Evelyn Cookson
were sent to foster homes when Orval was killed
in a car accident in 1934. The two youngest
children (Gloria and George) were adopted and
their names were changed. They are the only
two living children out of nine. My husband's
father was Sidney Cookson. Steven was adopted
by his step-father and his name was changed
to Steven Niles. His birth name was Sidney
Steven Cookson

In my research, this is what I have come up with. Rebecca Patterson married Albert B. Cookson, born 2 Oct 1839 and died 7 July 1916. He is buried in the Albert Cookson plot in the Pleasant Hill Cemtery, located in Etna, Maine. Albert was a farmer and served in Civil War. Albert married Rebecca Patterson of Carmel, Maine. I show her born 13 Oct 1847, died 30 Nov 1928 in Newport, Maine. She is also buried in the Albert Cookson plot. She died of diabetes and hardening of the artieries. Rebecca's father was Peter Patterson and her mother was Abigail Lawrence. They had eight children: Levi W. Cookson, Effie M. Cookson (Norton), John F. Cookson, Annie B. Cookson, Myron E. Cookson, Flossie Cookson, Oral Orman Cookson, and Flora A. Cookson. Albert and Rebecca lived in Etna, Maine. Their son, Oral Orman Cookson was the father of Sidney Cookson and this is the line I have been researching. I do have some other information and if you have any questions, please contact me at my email address: gangenealogy@aol.com

I replied to your email May 30, 2001 but did not hear from you. Did you get my reply? Would it be possible to send me a copy of the photo you have? Would like to hear from you. Thanks, Gerta.

I am looking for the background of Elizabeth Cookson, married to Russell Place of Lincoln County, Maine. Russell Place was in the Maine Infantry during the Civil War. Elizabeth Cookston Place received widow's benefits in Winthrop, Kennebec County in 1890.

I have not been able to work on my records for quite some time due to relocating from New York to Florida. I have talked to numerous Cooksons in Maine and none seem to know each other. I guess the name COOKSON in Maine is like SMITH around the country. I show a Peter Patterson married to Abigail Lawrence. Would Elizabeth be one of their children? While my records show an Elizabeth COOKSON I will have to do some searching in my files to find any information I might have collected on her. If I find anything I'll send it to you. Shall I send it to the board or to your e-mail address, which I show to be Dicookie@cs.com

Elizabeth Cookson was married to Russell Place and had several children, among them, my grandfather John Norton Place and his sisters Augusta and Mae. Since Russell was born in 1839, her birthdate must be near that. Family folklore says that she smoked a pipe! I've been able to find nothing about her family, although I agree there were many Cooksons in Lincoln County. My married name is Cookston, coincidentally.

I'm still searching for the ancestry of Elizabeth Cookson Place of Whitefield, Maine, born approximately 1840, widowed in 1886. Note the change in my e-mail address.

I am the Gloria Cookson, or rather Gloria Cookson, mentioned in the original post. My father was Raymond, my brother is Albert Cookson (living in Etna). My mother was Gloria Vanderhoof Cookson. My father is bured in the cemetary in Etna. I know that Evelyn was married to Oral Cookson, but that is about all. Yes some of the children, I ws told, died, two others - George and Gloria - was put up for adoption. George became - I have it written somewhere. Gloria became Nancy and lives/lived in Canada. I would appreciate any family history that any of you have.
