Does anyone know if Hannover still has good family and military records from the 18th & 19th centuries? I understand that much of Hannover city was destroyed in WWII...wondering what the chances are that I would find any remaining records, especially military post-Napoleonic Wars.

At least two of us are hoping for records. I'm researching an ancestor, Gustave August Klages who camr to Pgh, PA abt 1848. So far, I have not found German records of G. A. or his family.

Please let me know if you locate help.

I do not know if the records you are seeking still exist, however there is a gentleman living in Germany, who may be able to help you. His name is Udo Thoerner. The last I knew, he was writing a book on Venne Parish in Hanover. I am not certain of his e-mail address, however if you type his name in the search box for All Boards and then click on one of his messages you should be able to find it.

Hi,
I found some of my family on this very interesting German site which names of the fallen/killed soldiers. You can search (suche) by either surname or the name of the village where they originated. For instance if you search for "Stein" a list of battles and the year will appear, each gives a link to the page which gives men's names and other information

If you have not already done so, google Hannover.de where you will find everything you need to know about Hannover including where they keep their archives. English pages for those who do not read German

FamilySearch.com has books and microfilm rolls that can be rented and viewed at yout locah Family History center. I have rented a number of microfilm rolls for six dollars each, including one roll of church records. They are handwritten in an older German style, but you can usually understand and read the names, months, days of the month and years. Before you go into read the microfilm, you want to have a cheat sheet perpared with translations of genealogical words in German, such as birth, baptized, marriage, death, and dies.

I am also looking for any type of records that will help me locate my g-g-grandparents families. They lived in Hanover and left their sometime between 1845-1846. Their names where Frederick Albert b. Mar 13, 1802 in Hanover and Caroline Hoppe b. Oct. 30, 1813 in Hanover. They settled in WI.

They both worked for the Kaiser, he worked with the horses and she was a dressmaker for the Kaiser's family.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've looked on this German archive site to see if your relatives are mentioned - I looked for "Hoppe" as the other surname brought up far too many results. Although that surname is included, unfortunately not the girl you're looking for.

Although you state your ancestors came from Hanover I think maybe they lived in the Kingdom of Hanover, which we now know as Saxony and Lower Saxony in Germany. The royal family would have the use of more than one castle which will make your search a bit more difficult. This webpage shows some Saxony castles(schloss)in Germany
