I am looking for a George Dando, born in 1806 in Farmborough, Somerset. He married Elizabeth Bridges, who was also born in Farmborough in 1812 - they married in 1831 in Farmborough. They had lots of children, including Joseph Dando born in 1846, who was my Great Grandfather. I cannot find out anything more about George Dando or Elizabeth Bridges except that George was a Coal Miner. I cannot go back any further, can anyone else help, please?
Thank you

Hi David,

I'm researching the SALMON family from Farmborough and see you have Ann SALMON marrying George BRIDGES in 1807. I also have come across this entry but have not discovered Ann's baptism or parents, I'm hoping you might be able to help me on this.

I see from the marriage entry that one of the witnesses was Thomas FRIEND. It's probable that he was the same Thomas who married Celia SALMON at St Swithin, Walcot, Bath in 1808, Celia was the daughter of John SALMON and Elizabeth TOVEY of Farmborough. Incidently Celia married on the same day and same church as her elder sister Ester.

I also have a marriage between Caroline BRIDGES and John SALMON of Weston, Bath in 1839. John, born 1817, was the son of George SALMON of Weston but almost certainly born Farmborough in 1792 the son of John and Elizabeth, above. (I have information from a Will which points to Farmborough as George's birth place.)

Where you might be able to help is that I haven't been able to find the baptism of Caroline, I suspect it was in or around Farmborough the 1861 and 1871 Weston census has her birth place as Farmborough although by 1891 it was given as Weston. Caroline's marriage entry show her father to be John but that's all I have. Caroline was buried in Weston in 1891.

The only John I have been able to find in Farmborough who could fit as Caroline's father is John BRIDGES baptised along with his twin sister Susanna in 1786 the base born children of Hannah.

Any help would be appreciated

Regards

John

Hi John,
Some good news and bad.
Caroline, from her date of birth taken from census and death, was born circa 1818. The only caroline I have near that date was baptised in Farmborough 19/04/1818. She was the base born daughter of Elizabeth Bridges and Aaron Ashman. The John on the marriage cert. was probably John Flower who married Elizabeth Bridges 19/06/1821 in Farmborough.Maybe the vicar presumed his name was Bridges as hers was(?).
The bad news is that the twins John and Susannah died and were buried 4 days after their baptisms - in Farmborough Churchyard on 22/12/1786.

Hope this is of help. let me know if I can help further.

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

Many thanks for your reply in searching the Farmborough registers I did come across Elizabeth BRIDGES and Aaron ASHMAN as possible parents for Caroline but was thrown by the given name of her father, John BRIDGES, on her marriage entry.

I guess by the time she married John SALMON in 1839 her mother had been married for some 16 years so probably Caroline looked on John as her father or as you suggested the vicar assumed wrongly and the family for their own reason didn't put him right.

Cheers

Hello David

I am Nigel Bridges. I was born in Farmborough in 1952. I have just started to think about tracing my family but it is not as easy as I thought. My Dad was William Clifford Rees Bridges born around 1918ish, His Father [ my Ganddad] was called Wallace Bridges, dont know when or where he was born, but I would Guess the mid 1800's. Did you, do you Live in Farmborough, if so when ? Have you come across My Dad or Granddads Name in your searches ?

From FreeBMD.

William C R BRIDGES birth Dec qtr 1919, Clutton, 5c 754, mothers maiden name JONES.

Wallace F BRIDGES marriage to Cassie JONES Dec qtr 1911, Merthyr Tydfil, 11a 1247.

It looks like this may be Wallace's second marriage, as Wallace Frank BRIDGES married Winifred RANDALL, Dec qtr 1903, Clutton, 5c 1033. Winifred BRIDGES died Mar qtr 1907, Clutton, 5c 380, aged 25.

Clutton registration district covers Farmborough.

The only Wallace BRIDGES birth I can see is in Sep qtr 1879, again at Clutton.

1891 census has Wallace as a son of William and Sarah in Farmborough. He was aged 11 still at school. By 1901 he was still at home, but now a coal miner like his father and older brothers. He was 2 in 1881 census.

Hi Nigel,
Sorry for the delay. I usally only get the chance to work on family history at weekends.
I have the same info. that you received from Ian but can add some further family for you.
Wallace had a second name "Frank" as on the marriage entry for your dad. Your dad was married in Farmborough Church on the 22 March 1941.Your mother's father was Earnest James Reeves.
Wallace Frank married Winifred Randall at St Augustines Church, Clutton in 1903. He died 22/01/1961 and was buried in Farmborough churchyard on 25/01/1961.There is a gravestone and his wife is given as Tydfil Bridges - she was buried 16/11/1974 aged 94.
Wallace was one of the children of William and Sarah Bridges who were married in Twerton, St. Michael in 1860.
William was the son of John Bridges and Christiana - they were married in High Littleton 03/08/1823.
Have a look at the Bridges in Somerset Coalfield Connections
on the web. Use the Index to get to the Bridges. You'll find individual family histories including a lot of the census entries. Good hunting.
By the way I live in South Wales and am descende from Elijah Bridges who came over in 1860's but was born in Farmborough.
Let me know if you need further info.
Best regards, David.
