Hi Willard,

I spent a lot of time in Girdletree with my grandparents Clayton & Elizabeth Johnson. They lived behind and above the old post office. Also at a family friend's farm...Milton and Liz Pruitt on Onley Road. My G-grandparents are buried in the old cemetery just on the right side of Onely road as you leave the main road (Rte 12?) They were S. Caroline Johnson & John S. Johnson. Small world.. I had an Uncle Willard.

Thanks,
Alice

Sorry for the delayed response, I was out of town.

I will be happy to send you that info. It's nothing extensive. Just little rememberances of the local elders. I have it at work but and will type it up for you tomorrow.

Here's the info on the above as found in Ethelyne Pilchard's "Girdletree !!! Where the World is Girdltree?"
"In 1840, William Coard built a twenty room hotel on the soutwest side of Onley Road, complete with livery stables in the rear for convenience of his guests. Thomas Smack lived there with his family. He built livery stables on the opposite side of the road for commercial use and managed those also. William Ingersoll purchased the hotel property, probably in the 1920's for a home. He removed a portion of the hotel, consisting of many rooms, to a farm. Mr. Ingersoll also built and operated the first automobile service garage in Girdletree. It was located on the opposite side of Onley Road. Some years later, he operated two, tow story storage buildings, heated by coal burning stoves, to store sweet potatoes and white potatoes during the winter months. Farmers from miles around brought their produce for storage."

I hope this was of interest to you!

Thanks for your reply to Ingersoll. At first it did not make much sense. I believe the Ingersoll in your book is the nephew of my great grandfather. They were both William's.The William mentioned in your book is the son of Aaron Ingersoll. It would make sense since the 1920 ensus shows that William as an auto mechanic.
Thank you one more for filling in another piece of the puzzle

In your reply you mentioned a Thomas Smack. It happens that the William Ingersoll I was looking for ( the uncle to the William in your reply) was married to a Sarah Smack whose father was Thomas and his wife was Catherine. The 1870 census shows the Smacks living in Sandy Hills which I believe is now Stockton. So by accident it appears I have possibly found where my G grandfather met my G grandmother.

Wow, so another piece of the puzzle is accounted for. That's great. I'm so happy that Ethylene Pilchard put the Girdletree "history" in writing. These personal tidbits about the families that lived there are priceless to those searching.

Good luck in your future searches!
