I haven't checked these boards in some time and just came by your note.
I have son of Manfred Walls and Elizabeth Levin as
Samuel Walls in England m. Mary Manlove
Their son's name has been in conflict as to weater it is Samuel or William. Every thing I have points to it being William, so then it would be;
William Walls 1689/1777 m, Elizabeth Crew 1694/1755
He would have also been born in England and died in Delaware

The Manfred Walls - Elizabeth Levin and Samuel Walls and Mary Monlove are a fiction perptrated by a descendant of Manlove Walls in Indiana.

Interestingly, John Crew, who died about 1660 in Virginia had a son John shortly before he died. His widow, Elizabeth, married 2nd Robert Hignett. John Crew Jr., married first a Savage, then a Depray, then last the widow Annabelle Harvey, before dying c1712-1713 in Sussex County DE.

John had no know sons, but four daughters, of which Elizabeth was oldest. Elizabeth married a William Walls before 1710 as John Crew named John Walls as a grandson in his 1712 will. William died sometime before 1735 when his widow remarried Richard Cooper. That she was earlier married to a William is proven in deed records

Sons of William and Elizabeth, I believe are:

John Walls, married Sarah Bracy. He died before 1739 when widow Sarah married Wrixam Christopher. Jacob Walls is likely his son; Robert Walls (after R. Hignet) is probably his son, but could be the youngest son of William and Elizabeth Crew Walls.

William Walls, m. Elizabeth, d. 1776, sons Joshua and William named in Will.

Thomas Walls, m Jane?, sons Samuel, Levi, and Levin proven.

Somehow, the first William Walls in Sussex County does not appear on any deed records that I know of. Some have speculated that the Willaim Walls, ship owner and Captain, that was taking cargo back and for in the Chesapeake and up and down the coast during the same period, could be our William. The Maryland archives has a lot on the Captain William Walls, but little on his family. Maybe someone else can confirm or refute this specualtion?

Hello,
I just wanted to add that I have found a document that shows that John Crew's daughter, Elizabeth, was Elizabeth Rust in 1723. Also, a John Rust was selling (1723) 1/3 of a lot in Lewes that once belonged John Crew, suggesting that Elizabeth Crew was married to John Rust in 1723. This then suggests that William Walls died sometime before 1723.

Also, I found a page in a Sussex County Deed book (volume Q16, page 293) that shows Sarah Bracy Walls (daughter of Richard Bracy) was the mother of a Jacob and a John Walls (both under the age of 17 in 1738.

Hi Brian,

It has been a long time since I've heard from you. I see that the battle against the unproven English ancestry never ends. Our William Walls who married Elizabeth Crew might have been the son of the John Walls who was the mariner that operated between Liverpool and the Maryland Eastern Shore. I've never been able to prove this but it is a reasonable possibility. I expect to publish a 20 year update of the Walls Family of Delaware this year that will be about three times the size of the 1988 version. It'll be available on Amazon. I'm sure that Thomas and William Walls were the younger brothers of John Walls, son of William and Elizabeth but again, no absolute proof. Let me know what you are doing.

Yes, Levi and Levin Walls were twins. They were both baptized on 22 May 1748 at St. George's Chapel in Indian River Hundred in Sussex Co., Delaware, and their father is listed as Thomas Walls. Their mother's name isn't listed. This information is in St. George's Chapel Baptisms, p. 21, FHL Microfilm #0441424. There have been suggestions that the parents just hadn't gotten around to baptizing them when they were first born and baptized them together, but I don't think this supposition is valid since their sister Delilah was baptized in 1747 as listed on p. 20.

I'm not aware of any of the Walls of Delaware moving to Georgia, though it is possible that a few did. The major migration routes for the Walls that left Delaware was first to West Virginia. Some went to Pennsylvania from there but most went to Ohio and Kentucky. From Ohio and Kentucky they went to various parts of Indiana and Illinois and from there to points west.

Other than that you will not get notification, even if you

Linda,

I didn't make it in 2008 but the new edition should be available on Amazon.com sometime in March 2009. I've just finished correcting the proof copy and emailing the revised version to the printer. The revised version of the Walls Family of Delaware will be 272 pages including 4 pages of bibliography and a 33 page index. It took a lot longer than I expected to finish it. It isn't perfect but it's much better and far more comprehensive than the first edition.

Yes I do mention Elizabeth Crew and William Walls who I believe are the founders of the Walls Family of Delaware. There is a 1759 deposition by Elizabeth where she states that she married William Walls the same day that her father married (as his 2nd wife) Annabelle Harvey, the widow of Richard Harvey, but the date is not mentioned. My calculation is that this was about 1708 and in Sussex Co. Elizabeth’s father John Crew first bought land (with his step-father Robert Hignut/Hignutt/Hignett) in Sussex Co. in 1679. John, his mother and his step father had been living in Somerset Co., Maryland. John Crew is listed in the 1693 Tax List of Sussex Co. Elizabeth was born about 1692/1694 so she was born in Sussex Co. Elizabeth’s mother was Elizabeth Depree (Depray/Dupree/Dupre/du Pre’). I don’t cover the Depree family in my book but there is a good deal of information on them in F. Edward Wright's, "Colonial Families of Delaware," Vol. 3, Westminster, MD: Willow Bend Books, 2000. William Walls died before 1723 and Elizabeth subsequently married John Rust and after he died she married Richard Cooper.

I would certainly appreciate it if you pass on the word to other interested parties that the book will soon be out. I hope you find the book worthwhile. Thanks.

Hi Gwen,

Wow! Someone with the Hignutt surname! I’ve seen it that way and also as Hignett. Has the family used both of these names over time? My grandmother was also a Walls which is why I worked on this line. Her name was Cassie Walls (Condrey) and she lived just over 100 years.

I published the first edition of the “Walls Family of Delaware” in 1988 and it was 88 pages including an 8 page index. The new second edition has 272 pages and a 33 page index. The 1st edition covered 6 generations and the new one covers 8 generations. This edition has more information on the colonial era and on each of the subsequent generations. It doesn’t have answers for all of our questions but it has more answers and better answers than the 1st edition. It should be available at Amazon.com by or before the end of March 2009. And, yes, I would appreciate it if you passed the word on to other Walls descendants.

Nice to hear from you Lewis. LOL, I don't just have the Hignutt surname, I am a Hignutt born and raised!
My ggg-grandfathers grave stone is in a family plot and has a large marker with Hignutt and a smaller personal one with Hignett, so I am guessing it actually changed for good at that point. Though I have heard that his grandfather Daniel was the only brother to stay on the shore and keep close to the original spelling. The rest went to spellings like Hignight, Hignite, etc.
My grandmother (Walls-Messick) lived to be 79 which was pretty good in the late 60's, she was born in 1889 in Galestown, Md. Who were your grandmothers parents and grandparents? My great grandfather was Henry Clay Walls, his father was Gideon and Mary Jane Walls (nee)...
I can't wait for your book!
BTW I was mentioned in Elsie Mae Walls Robinsons book. She was a "cousin" to my grandmother and interviewed her for the book..

great hearing from you!

Gwen,

There was a Hignite/Hignight in my database that married a Walls in Orange Co., Indiana. I made a quick trace of the family using Ancestry and indeed, as you suggested, they came out of your Hignutt/Hignett family.

You and I are 8th cousins. It’s necessary to go all the way back to William Walls and Elizabeth Crew to find a common ancestor. Starting with my Walls grandmother my line goes: Cassie, John Whitcomb, Elias, Dr. Job, Rev. Joshua, Joshua Sr, William, and finally William & Elizabeth.

Things now seem to be going smoothly with the Walls book and it should be out in a few weeks - definitely before the end of March.

Thanks for the information.

In researching the WALLS and related lines, primarily the LANGLEY family which was also in Edgefield Co by 1790, there seems to have been a migration from Edgefield to Carroll Co., GA in the 1820's. I noticed several WALLS families in and around Carroll Co. in the 1830-1850 census. Whether there is a connection, I don't now yet, but it is worth looking at for those researching Georgia WALLS.

David Langley died 1822 in Edgefield Dist. SC. His will names his wife Sarah, his mother-in-law Mary Anderson and his "wife's son James Hamilton". His will also says that "I give to James Hamilton after my wife's death or marriage 50 acres of land to be laid out of that left my wife ajoining of Sanders/Landers Hamilton's land". One of the witneses of the will is Alexander Hambleton/Hamilton.

Was Sarah's maiden name Anderson? Who were your Langleys?

Who was Sarah's first husband Mr. Hamilton, and when did he die? A James Hamilton died in 1802 in Fairfield, SC and Sarah Hamilton was the Administrator. Is this the Sarah (probably Anderson) Hamilton who married David Langley?

Linda,

I’m glad you liked my book. I now have a website up at www.h-kpublishers.com about the book.

I believe the case that you are looking for involves Honour’s husband Ralph Tindall (or Tyndall). Ralph is definitely Honour’s husband and Elizabeth Crew Walls et cetera refers to Tindall in the 1759 deposition where she mentions that she married William Walls the same day that her father John Crew married Annabelle Harvey (as her 2nd husband).

Other than going to the Delaware Archives it’s very hard to do any research on their records. They keep everything tightly closed and their on line databases are virtually useless since you can’t use wildcards (*) in your search and the data bases don’t use fuzzy logic to locate near misses. You need to know the exact spelling of the name and the exact year of the record or you find nothing. If you had the exact spelling and the exact year of the record, you wouldn’t need to do the search.

The squabble might have involved the huge 900 acre parcel “West Chester” that John purchased in 1679 with step-father Robert Hignutt. I assume the joint purchase was because John was only 19 at that time. John may have had funds from his father’s livestock that his mother Elizabeth gave equally to him and his older sisters Anne and Elizabeth, just before she married Robert Hignutt (her 2nd husband). Each sister received her 1/3 when she was 21, so the last remaining 1/3 belonged to John in 1679.

Annabelle and her (3rd) husband Richard Bracy sold this land in 1727 to her three daughters by John Crew for 5 shillings. I don’t how that would relate to today’s money but it would seem to be a fraction of what the land was actually worth. The three daughters were Hono(u)r and husband Ralph Tindall, Anne and husband William Stockley and Frances and husband William Stevens.

I would imagine you would need to check the archives for years 1756-1760 looking for these names.
