My grandfather Jozsef Csanadi was born in 1893 Gelsa, Zala Megge, Hungary and my grandmother Franciska Geroly was born in 1901 in Koszeg, Vas Megge, Hungary. Jozsef immigrated to Canada in 1912 and then came into the US in 1914. Csanadi was changed to Chonody as some point. Rumor has it that it occured at the border between Canada and the US. Franciska immigrated to the US via Ellis Island in 1921. Would love to know anything about other family members.

The spelling came after your ancestor arrived to the "new land" knowingly or unwilingly. It comes down to pronounciation.
The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) website is listing church records of Gelse, Zala megye and Koszeg, Vas megye. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.
There were 28 CSANADIs, 11 CSANADYs, and 5 GEROLYs that came thru EI.
Franciska on her EI manifest has that she is from Czak.
GEROLY (with umlauts on O) list in Koszeg's phone book.

Hello Elizabeth Friedmann: I am from the Abert family, from Kamon, near Szombathely in the Vas Megy region. My grandfather Gyula was married first to Irka(Ilona) Barabas. My father, also Abert Gyula,(1907-1943) was from that marriage. Could my grandfather be related to your grandmother Wilma Abert? My father and some of his brothers changed their surname to Abonyi, but my grandfather died as Abert Gyula Sr. Presently, I live in southern Ontario, Canada with my family.
Yours truly,
Julius Abonyi

re: Wilma Abert or Albert as had been written in some documents, may not be related to your grandfather. She was the
second wife of John Geroly. Unfortunately, I did not know all of her siblings or immediate family. She was related to the Bendes family as well. I hope this helps in your search, as I and other members of my family will always welcome any news of our family. Thank you, Liz

Hello Liz: That Wilma Abert ia also referred to as Albert is interesting. We have a "Family name History" for Abert and Albert is one variant. We have been trying to attach a copy as a file without success. I will post the information undrer the surmname Abert in a few days. I do not know much about my grandfather, Abert Gyula Sr. (1872-about 1948). I met him only twice as a very young child. He was married twice, first to Irka (Ilona)Barabas, my grandmother, who died young in 1908. They had two sons, Erno, I think and Gyula, my father. There were 3 more children from the second marriage. My father and some of his brothers changed the surname to Abonyi, but my grandfather died as Abert. I understand that some documents, especially handwritten ones showed variations in spelling. Thank you and good luck with your search as well. Regards, Julius Abonyi
