DALTON'S - Kinmount

Hello - I am looking for the DALTON family from the Peterborough area: James and Mary DALTON of Kinmount. James was born, I believe in Niagara Falls in 1847. Mary (nee Collins) was born in 1854 (unsure where). By 1871 they were living in Kinmount where they had the following children: John (Jack) 1871; Robert 1874; Bernard (Bert) 1878; Lucy 1880; Joseph 1884; William 1885; and Albert 1890. There possibly was also another daughter named Mary (Polly). They moved to Alberta around 1906. I have Mary (Collins) Dalton as being buried in a cemetary in Kinmount. If anyone has any info on the name of this cemetary or has access to it, I would appreciate the help. I am also very interested in any documents that will show James' mother and father's names. I have not had any luck in finding them in any census'.

I am from Kinmount, where 'Janice' was looking for the Dalton's. My mother b.1926 in Kinmount, remembered them from Galway Twp in Peterborough County. There is a hill on Crystal Lake Road, the 3rd or 4th concession s. of Kinmount - called Dalton's Hill - it is now the landfill for the area. Some families that may have more information have the names of Pearson and Allen(Kathleen Collins married Bob Allen - their children are still in the Kinmount area) . The cemetary you mentioned is on Galway Road - I will try to find the gravestone and take a picture for you if you'd like me to.

Thank you so much for the information and offer of a picture of the gravestone - I would definitely be interested and thankful. I don't think we are actually talking about the same Dalton's as mine came to Alberta in 1906 or 07. James died in 1912 and Mary died in 1911. But according to my information, Mary was buried in Kinmount. She was born in 1848. I have no information on James' siblings or parents, but figure the Dalton's your mother remembers must be some kind of relation to mine. Thank you again for your response

Did your Mary die in Alberta in 1911? According to my Mom, she only recalls the name, not Daltons in recent history, as in, it appears that they moved away (maybe Alberta?). I will definitely check the marker in the old Galway cemetary the next time that I'm up north.

Dear Janice:

You will find 1901 census info for James Dalton (born August 28, 1845 in Ontario, Canada) & Mary Ann Collins (christened March 28, 1846 at Templetenny parish Catholic Church, Ballyporeen, Tipperary, Ireland) & their children at http://www.archives.ca/02/02012202_e.html , if you check Ontario & go to Victoria (North) District 119 Subdistrict Galway (i-3) Schedule 1 Page 2.

Please note that while Mary Ann Collins' brother Patrick Collins (Mar 13, 1835 - Jan 31, 1914) was the enumerator for the census, he tended to make spelling errors & to change birthdates to make people seem younger than their real age. Also note that Galway township spans both Victoria & Peterborough counties when looking for information.

The 1891 census info was online (last time I checked) at http://users.rootsweb.com/~ongenpro/census/transcript/Peterb... .

You can search the 1881 Canadian Census on the Mormon website at http://www.familysearch.org, but note that the family name is misspelled DAULTON on the census or transcription. You can find a complete searchable transcription of the 1881 Canadian Census for Galway & Cavendish townships, Peterborough (East), Ontario here.

The 1871 Canadian Census for Ontario is indexed online at http://130.15.161.100/census/index.html or at the National Archives website http://www.archives.ca. You'll have to look up the microfilm at a local library to find out details. I think it possible that James Dalton's father & brother may be listed on this census in Dummer Township, Peterborough County, Ontario.

I have more info if you would care to email me. If you are a descendant of Mary Ann Collins & James Dalton, then we are related & I would appreciate any info you could share with me.

Thank You.

PS My parents noted that four sons or grandsons of this family settled near Wainwright, Alberta.

Dear Janice S.:

I am a descendant of the (Irish Catholic) Collins family who settled on lots 16 & 18 Concession 12 Galway township, Ontario in the late 1850s. I would very much appreciate your help with local info as I am uncertain whether any of my cousins in the area are online or interested in genealogy.

My father's notes indicate that Kathleen Collins' mother was Dora Byrne but I am uncertain of her father's first name, possibly Lorne or Laurence Collins? Perhaps you can straighten out this confusion.

Thank You!

I believe that your mother is correct, (it's always important to tell them so). The Dalton family of Dalton's Hill is the same family that Janice is researching.
